Hello Commer people.

I saw a nice little camper at a local car show yesterday and have been looking into it ever since, about doing a new little project and I think this ticks the boxes.
Does anyone live in Essex or Suffolk that has one I could get a good look at or have some photos of one in bits, not just the finished photos.

I've built 3 westfield/caterhams and an Ultima GTR so far so something classic this time sounds fun.

I would be looking to fit a different moden-ish engine and box, what options do I have that will fit?
A 2.5 ford V6 is what I am thinking would it fit? good idea/stupid idea?

What have people done about upgrading brakes and shocks?

What is the towing capacity of the commer and has anyone got a tow bar fitted, what I'm getting at is could I pull a trailer and car.

Wellcome to the mad house :D[}:)]:D dotty one was in that area but think she has gone to new home haven't heard from her lately :(smurf is on her way home pulling a trailer [8D][^]fleet at mo :D
all the stuff you are looking for can be found using search Top right
fontaine has a 2ltr pinto auto but having shake down issues at the mo,just been away fro the w/e so catch-up soon [8D]

Dozer did a Ford V6 conversion and Admin has just revealed the results of his secret project - check out the last few pages of 'My V8 Commer' :p
Greasy Eddy has also embarked on an 8 pot installation using a slightly different approach. All in all quite a bit for you to research, as Cris says the search button at the top of the page is the best place to start.

hello there. If you check out the "Campsites in Scotland" thread you'll see piccies of Ruaridhdunfords highwayman towing one of his Austin 7s, I'm planning on towing a small wooden trailer with our van too.

I did a bit more searching.

I was thinking of a Duratec V6 out of Mondeo, with the thought of also using the A/C, but seaching someone was thinking of a Vauxhall V6 why would this be better?

I'm not sure what gearbox would be best to use with it, any advice?

Has anyone else swaped out the brakes for disc apart from the humber hawk.

What are my chances of getting a rolling chassis in good nic? I'm not a huge fan (reads good) at bodywork

rolling chassis in good nick? mmmm, tends to be chassis problems that finish vans off so you'd be more likely to be looking at complete van - but seem to remember a coachbuilt coming up late last year with smashed fibreglass bodywork so you might be lucky

Hi thanks I have looked at both the links, good info.

When I said rolling chassis, I ment shell, basicly a rolling Van with the rusty bits done.
Something like an unfinished project.

A moden-ish V6 is sounding better and better to me, a bit of power/torque, should have a good motorway cruse and be able to tow

I think I am right in saying the ford V6 has a mazda bolt pattern
So Vaxhuall V6 is sounding good but I'm not sure on the gearbox still the omega were mainly auto's and the manuals were not very strong.

Can anyone offer any gearbox advice
 
Get yourself a vauxhall V6 and use a carlton GSI or senator 24v box as they are getrag boxes which are virtually bomb proof, if your thinking of independant rear suspension then the carlton/senator diff is a limited slip diff and disc brakes, only down side is availability at the mo but seek and ye will find.:)
 
Does anyone more info on the VX V6 option and the fitting the LSD.

I'm very intrested in going down this route so any info I can gatter the better, no point in reinventing the wheel if we are out of the stone age :)
