We have just had a adventure of 700 miles round trip to buy our first commer from the very top of Scotland and of course it had to be a non runner me thinking it's a commer what could go wrong so packed up trusty points and condenser 4 plugs and new battery tools, wife and wee one for a day trip, got to the van and had him going in 15 min (condenser burnt out) checked over we test drive gave the man some cash and hit the road drove great it would have been better if I was hard of hearing that I think I am now lol but unfortunately he only made it to perth with a knock knock!!! I'm feeling sick noise so got it recovered home ready for a engine rebuild and gearbox as it used all of its atf and what it didn't use it sprayed of my wife's car behind me but he is home and named bluey. I am looking for any info on the build as I haven't seen any with the poptop that is fitted or if anyone knows the van as for as I know it was green in colour originally very keen to get started on him for our weekends away. Nice looking camper, shame about the engine though:(
I think it's a Viking Spacemaker roof and I think the conversion is the same name by Viking Motorhomes - very rare on a Commer as they were usually a VW conversion.

Thank you very much its definitely a viking just looked it up I need struts to hold the roof up to check the rest of it. Just found out it was green and was used as a prop vehicle in a show in England and kept in a prop wear house on further search I found this picture from 3 years ago so must have looked like this in the show? The inside is not in a good place but with a bit of searching and help I should be able to track down the bits I needthank you again that is a big help on the understanding the van. Had a play after work with the roof to see what is going on first picture is a veiw from upstairs there is a lot of work to be done, can confirm its a viking top for a commer as I fount the righting under the top floor cover unfortunately it's not for this commer as there has never been rivits in the roof to hold it all down but the shell is fitted and is watertight there is a lot of bits missing that we will try to get or remake close to original, trims, roll up beds, new struts and so on. Picture 2 and 3 is what it looks like with the roof up very impressed with the hight and space.
 
Wow an indoor awning, that's huge :cool: Better watch out it could develop it's own weather system it's that big:D
What a great project, the cabinets look to be pretty solid and saveable.
 
I have bluey up on axle stands dropped the engine oil ( not metallic) removed stearing arms flywheel cover and exuast clamp, all sump bolts loose so think that's my oil leek but can't drop sump with the auto box in place but a good start in a hour or so. Underneath is very good only rust I have found is the bottom of the battery try so overall very happy with a good shell to work with, inside is 80% good the back n/s top unit wood needs work and one bit of ply needing replaced but going to remove all units to replace ply floor but first thing is first get the knocking under control.
 
I have been looking around your forum and found (I can't believe it) the full build on bluey with pictures and all that has been done to him.

This will explain the oversized hole in the roof then a panel welded back in for the poptop to be fitted, do we know who got it after baz

Almost immediately after picking her up from Woolfy after his work the engine and auto gearbox failed so a new engine and auto box was sourced, I think from Speedy Spares.

The huge hole in the roof was in theory to put a perspex sheet in to add more light and to look at the stars at night. It didn't happen in the end.

I sold her (for Patience was a her at the time) to to a lovely lady from mid Wales who had a son who was going to help her do up the inside and put a roof on. Doesn't look like the first part happened.

I often wondered what happened to her and it's good to see he's found a good home. Looks like he needs it.

Thank you very much bass, I am talking to my wife to change the name back to origanal as I think it would be right she has lived upto her name as not long after I picked her up the engine or gearbox has now got a knocking noise but I think i will carry on from you and finish what you had started. the engine is half stripped the pistons are coming out at the weekend along with the gearbox and both will be fully rebuilt and painted and work out the way from there I hope to get a couple of holidays in her this year and the rest will be as we go I just wish it was left green as the blue is not a good job and not what she deserves.
