Hi guys wannabees here!

Hi guys, just thought we'd say hello and introduce ourselves!

We are Kath and Rach (and Alice the mad white Boxer dog!) and live in Barnsley South Yorkshire. We love all things classic and have a (dare we say it on here?!):I VW T25 Camper at the mo, but love the old skool stuff!

We have spotted a 1973 commer highwayman deluxe for sale down the road from us and we love it! - After looking at the forum it turns out to be the one spotted at Newark Autojumble which is in the for sale section of the forum.

We went for a test drive in it and it's great! there's only one thing that's worrying us and thats a bit of water ingress that's evident down the drivers side of the over cab bit - I'm guessing from the seal - as the veneer on the wooden over cab frame thingy is damaged and spongey and needs repairing.

So before making the guy an offer we wondered what you 'experts' thought?! We really love the van but are just worried about what's involved cost wise for such a repair?

Any tips before buying would be much appreciated as we are new to all this really![8)] and if there are any fellow commer fans near to us that'd be good to know too![8D]

Anyway, we've babbled enough for now!

Cheers and hope to hear from you guys soon,

Kath, Rach & Alice :)

you have a V,,,?? grrrr a darksider! LOL all are welcome here!:D

personally I am not that technical, it sounds like a relatively easy fibreglass repair?

I'm sure someone will be along soon to help....Martin Maltas lives in Yorkshire, he may be able to help. You could look him up if you click on members at the top right of the page.....

Welcome to the Madhouse!!!

With the silly prices VWs are fetching you should easily be able to afford any repairs to the Commer.

See you at Martin's for the Commerfest!

Peggy's got an MOT !!! (not a lie)

Welcome to the world of the completely mad. :D

Just to add to what has already been said, the dampness may be caused to a leaking join in the outer skin. Not sure whether it is fibreglass or aluminium over the cab. Chances are this may have caused some localised damage to the timber framing underneath which may need to be replaced. This may not be as bad as it sounds and a number of other owners have successfully tackled this type of repair at home. ;)

Hi, hello and welcome, you just have to get the Highwayman, the bit over the cab is fiberglass on mine and should be a real easy fix on yours. It would be great to get another Highwayman on the forum and at meets.

Moley and Brian the Snail :)

Welcome, it really is a mad house one here.
We actually saw this camper and took the photos at Newark, it looked good to us , however as we have a Wanderer we don't really know anything about coach built Commers, but as you can see there is lots of help and advice from them that do know.
Let's hope you buy it and get to come to the 50th birthday party in July.:D :D

Would this be the one:I
Looks very nice. Water can get into the wooden frame and cause rot. If you are lucky its just the lining so try and get someone in the know to check it out for you just in case.

There seems to be a trend forming of dogs that are as mad as the owners on here so welcome Alice you are well and truly hooked, why not bring Kath and Rach along with you to the next meet - Welcome to the Madhouse:D

Hi Guys

Many thanks for your warm welcome! Yes Panky that is the one in question, it seems in good order for it's age!

We are going to have another look tomorrow night, so will keep you all updated! You never know, we may come back with it!

I'm a bit worried about these Madhouse references?! - is it compulsary when becoming a commer fan to be loopy then?!

See you soon hopefully!
