does anyone have any ideas about which tyres i should fit to my Commer Wanderer, at the moment its resting in a barn, and after alot of work its almost ready for an mot. Its sitting on crossplys, two are very good the others need replacing, problem is the cost of crossply compared to radials, and then one tyre company told me that any tyres over ten years old is an mot failure, so i am not sure which way to go, would be very interested to know what other Commer van fans are riding on, all the best jigsawjohnny

Hi Johnny and welcome to the Madhouse:D
First thing is ten year old tyres is not an MOT failure - yet. Age isn't a problem, according to my MOT man, as long as they are fit for purpose - but I'd get rid of the crossply's anyway. Are you running 14 or 15 inch wheels? I've got 185 R 15C's fitted to my Auto-Sleeper ('C' for commercial) and they are very close to the original diameter tyres and run well.
Any pics of your Wanderer:)

Hi Thanks for your quick reply and the info on the tyres, i have made a note of the size 185 R 15C Thanks. My wheels on "KNJ" our Wanderer, are 15" just wondered if the radials would make the steering heavier, but hopefully not. As soon as i have worked out how to send pictures from my phone!.... i will. Cheers.

Hi and welcome Johnny, well done on restoring your van....hope it gets through the mot. Regarding tyres, I've got Avons on mine. I'm pretty sure they are more than ten years old, I haven't had an advisory on them yet. Not sure on my tyre size as my van isn't with me. Lije Panky says pics would be great.:)

Hello Andrew, Thanks for your input, like you my tyres are Avons, but they are quite old, although the front pair are in good shape with good tread, but the ones on the rear need replacing and crossplys are really expensive, so will have to go and buy five radials!....Hey Ho!.. least will have all new rubber. Kind Regards

I've never had crossplys so cant compare, but I've always found the steering weight to be just right (I don't mind a bit of effort at parking speeds;))

I'm on 15" wheels and did have crossplys on originally, I'm now on radials, the vans ride is a little softer and the revs a little higher as the radials sit lower.
