Grrrr!!!

I'm getting ready for the big push to Le Mans in two weeks time, and need to take the old girl to the dodgy MOT shop! However, we currently have an ongoing static Commer situation, the cltch master cylinder has decided after forty odd years that it's finally had enough of being prodded in and out all the time and packed in. I've had the blasted thing to bits and cleaned it all up. Now for some reason the fluid refuses to leave the integral reservoir and flow into the cylinder. The rubbers seem okay but I'm just off to Speedyspares in Hove for a new set, though don't hold out much hope. (Incidentally Speedy's close tonight and are not open again for a nine days!!)

Has anyone the faintest clue as to why this should be? I'd thought I'd cleaned out the little holes visible in the bottom of the fluid reservoir which resembles a "tin can".

Failing that does anyone have a spare and/or secondhand one I could buy, beg steal or borrow?

I had this problem recently and after a tip from one of our fellow members, I solved it.
Get hold of an old syringe, fit a rubber pipe in place of the needle, fill it with brake fluid and inject fluid in through the slave bleed valve. Eventually the fluid comes out of the top of the reservoir, taking all the air with it, Voila :p

PS. There are 2 types of master cylinder seals, take yours with you to get the right one. ;)

I've had the slave to bits too, so I'm intimately aquainted with that too. I'll give it a go!

If I suck on the threaded hole I can get some fluid through, (yuk and I think it's poisionous too) but once the piston's pumped the fluid doesn't replace itself from the reservoir.

Sounds like the piston is getting stuck in the bore. But Martins suggestion sounds good, once the system is full again hydraulic pressure along with assisstance from the return springs should push the piston back as it should.

Another way is to preasure bleed it if you have access to an air line get a spare screw on lid for the cylinder pot turn your air line down to about 15psi drill a hole in the spare lid crack bleed nipple off use an air dust off tool put the nozzle in the hole hold a rag round it press the trigger and should force the cylinder full of fluid and come out the bleed screw tighten up and jobs a good one.:D ps if you are still with us after tasting brake fluid not good for you!!;)
 
Did it! Airline from tyre inflator worked a treat! Thank you everyone!

Been up the road, all going fine til rubber popped on the slave cyl! Speedy's are shut for nine days, anyone got any bright ideas?
 
Martin that would be wonderful.

The internet's a fantastic thing. You get to speak with loads of helpful people who are generous with the time, knowledge and spare parts to folk they've never met, simply because of a shared passion for some old vans. Aren't Commer people great eh!

Just to let everyone know, but Martin Maltas is a prince amongst men. The new slave cylinder rubbers turned up today good as gold. If I can get them fitted tomorrow morning then it's MOT time. Gulp!
