help peeps

so today i finally got finished cleaning painting ect and sorted out the diff oil.once finished i took her for a run [8D] at first everything was spot on but she seemed to miss a little when i got into O/D (which works perfectly) after a while she seemed to start missing more but i noticed that when ticking over or revving (out of gear) she dont miss at all, so it would seem it only does it under load. she also cut out a few times coming up to junctions but did fire back up. as i pulled back into my road she seemed to throw a strop at me, she was missing loads and holding back howether againg she was fine when i pulled into the space and knocked her out of gear [?][)] i didnt go very far, maybe ten miles or so.
she came upto temp nicely and sat at half way so no overheating when she wasnt missing she pulled very well and sounded fine. my first guess is a lead breaking down or fuel evap but im meant to go colchester tomorrow (about 20 miles away) and im hoping someone may have had this before and can tell me whats going on ect as my boy is really looking forward to it but i just cant afford to buy any parts ect in the morning without losing out on the day [V] could it be as simple as just re-cleaning the plug and lead ends[?] or is there some handy tips on how i can do it lol. at the mo the only thing i can think is do the trip slowly and in 2 stages each way stopping to let her cool down ect, HELP [:(!]

Tricky one Paul, as it could be any number of small things. I would agree with you about the plugs and leads, but would also take a look at the points. Have they closed up a little? I had a problem once which was caused by the heel of the points wearing away on the spindle, causing the points to close up. Re-gapping and a drop of grease on the spindle solved it. Do you have a spare condenser? They can sometimes be the cause of problems.

Good luck and I hope you make it to Colchester tomorrow. The weather should be better than today as the cloud moves away.

Hey Paul........is your dizzy or rotor arm new?? There was a dodgy batch of rotor arm floating about for a while......or, do you think it could be a fuel issue? whip the top half of the carb off and check for the dreaded snakeskin.....check also your inline fuel filters between the fuel pump and carb...any bits floating around?

I had a problem with cutting out occasionally at roundabouts at the end of dual carriageways [:0] It just needed the tickover tweaked up a bit on the carb. If it is problem under load sounds like it could be electric related like you say,I had the lead from the coil to the dizzy shorting on the rocker cover before but that cut the engine, would guess the points options already set out is potential culprit. Good luck sorting it.

Wait until it's totally dark and go out and start it, then you can physically see any shorting/tracking of leads quite clearly. If it's not that check/replace the dizzy cap and rotor arm and points. have a good look at the fuel line/filter as well ;)

cheers for all the replies peeps, sorry for the delay but i had to go out tonight :( i worked out that i did 8.9 miles. to be honest none of it is new, its all as it arrived to me with the exception of the air filter and exhaust.

my plan for tomorrow is:
1. clean up the plugs and lead end and wd40 them
2. clean up rotor arm and dizzy cap connections
3. check fuel line for kinks
4. remove air filter, start, place hand over intake and rev it up to try and clear any crud in there
5. if i get time grease the spindal

i topped up the diff, it didnt make any differance to the noise but at least it has some in, i did notice a little pulle under the diff but i think thats where i spilled oil all over the diff filling it lol

dumb question, how do i set the gap on points, i have never done it?

You will need a feeler gauge the right size for your points gap (sorry I don't know the correct gap). Rotate the engine until points are open their widest. This will be when the heel of the points is touching the outer lobe of the spindle. There should be a screw in the baseplate of the points, which you loosen. Adjust the points so that you can fit the feeler gauge between the contacts with slight drag, but not so much that it is forcing the points apart. Tighten the screw, then check the gap again. All done - simples!

result, i will try that. i have had a set of feeler guages for years but so far i have never needed them lol. i have a massive list of things to get done tommorrow but if it works i will be chuffed

If the contacts look burnt/pitted, well I just managed to get these before the price hike;)

im thinking i may treat her to electronic ignition soon ;)

My advice would be to replace one item at atime with a run out to test it. That way you should be able to identify the culprit. If you change everything in one go you'll be none the wiser.

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

My 2 cents - Every time I have had the problem you describe (misfiring under load) it has been the ignition leads. My Commer had that problem when I bought it - idled nice, revved nice in the driveway, but only 3 cylinders when trying to get up to speed, with the odd backfire thrown in for fun. If the misfire is erratic, it could be the rotor, coil lead, points, condenser, a vacuum leak etc, but an even, regular misfire (like dropping down to 3 cylinders under load) would suggest the problem was isolated to one cylinder = cap or lead or plug.

cheers guys, im planning on replacing it all 1 part per day and then take her to work each day, kiwi that sounds pretty much like dollies prob to me mate :)

Mini leads fit a treat:) If you get them from Halfords as for some of a 1889 model as thier database doesn't go any further back than that:I

How far back do you expect their database to go? :D ;)
