Help needed.

There's petrol on the top, I can't see where it's leaking from. Should I start it again to have look, could it be that the screw needs to be lossened off?
 
The tick-over wont make it leak, you will need to start it to find out where it's coming from but be careful.

Is it coming from here? If it is then that's the overflow.

The float valve is stuck down, try giving the side of the carb a couple of sharp taps with the handle of a screwdriver to see if that frees it off. Otherwise you need to take the top of the carb of to see what's wrong. It could be a bit of debris stuck under the seat or even a hole in the float causing it to fill up with petrol and sinking.
 
I've restarted my van but I can't see where it's leaking from. I can't see any petrol around the overflow. There is some petrol underneath the carburettor.
 
There's only one place it could be coming from in that case, it's probably the float chamber gasket. That's the one under the top of the carb held down by the four screws you can see, try giving then a tighten up.

Yes the float chamber is under there, but you also need to undo the linkages on the side. Be careful not to break the gasket - if it's not already split.

Are they the screws in the picture?
 
Yes they are the screws.
If the float is stuck then or petrol is dribbling down into the carb from a leaking gasket then yes it could be.
 
Thanks Panky, I'll tighten up the screws to start with, if needed where will I get a new gasket from? How do I undo the linkage next to the carb?
 
Thanks Panky, so it's best to check the float aswell? So it could ba a combination of the float and a leaking gasket?
 
The gasket may have been leaking for a while but if the float has stuck then the petrol level would rise up to the gasket and dribble out.
 
OK first this pin needs to be removed, there should be a little circlip holding it in.



Next remove the split pin from here so the rod can be pulled through the hole.



Once that's done and the four screws have been removed the top should come off with a little persuasion.
Pull out the brass rod to remove the floats. Once they're off give them a shake to see if you can hear and fuel inside.





then take the float valve needle out and look inside the seat to see if there's any debris.






There's also a rubber seal in the body of the carb, around the inlet, make sure it hasn't split.

Cheers Panky, will have a look tomorrow. There has always been a strong smell of petrol around the carburettor. If there is debris will the float just go back into position?
 
Yes, but make sure the pin goes back in centrally as it could catch on the side as you put the top back on.
Make sure you post some pics of what you fid.
