Help, Information Needed.

My problem is that it goes fantastic around town but to get to town I have to go a short trip on a single lane state highway. It's quite rural and if I'm lucky enough I can sit behind a tractor and cruise.

But as I struggle to get over 50mph most people just overtake me. I had an incident a few weeks ago where somebody was sitting so close to my ass that they didn't see the oncoming car they nearly pulled into. They quickly got out of the way but it could have been nasty. Naturally I got the horn and flashing lights from Mr Leadfoot so it was my fault.

I know I'm in the right but I honestly think it's a danger hazard going that slow. I do have a Rover P5 3.9 diff floating about but as my van is stock I doubt it will have enough guts to get up the hills in my street. It barely does now! So if I swap the diffs then I'd have to warm up the engine.

Anyway, I'm in a sorry situation where it hasn't been back out on the streets since that incident and I'm in no real rush to. Funny thing is that I ride my pushbike along the same stretch twice daily with no dramas at all. Usually a meter between myself and a semi trailer going 100kph.

A standard van in good health should hit 65 so it looks like old age is taking it's toll, I wonder how many of the original horses have bolted out of the coral:( I've heard of worse though so it's hopefully just a matter of tinkering rather than major surgery.

65mph in my dreams:(:(:(:(. Standard mini bus 3 speed auto will 40 to 50. As we found out going to Tatton last week you do 50 for 20 miles them stop for a 1/2 hour to let it cool down:mad:. just get out and enjoy the ride:):):):). Well worth the effort. Falkirk to Tatton 12 hours 280 miles. :):):):) Did better return journey 10 hours:):):):)

I know where you are coming from here, My bus is the same and after touring Aust in it, idiots overtaking when not safe was my biggest stress. All you can do is keep far over and pull over often to let them past. Also try and enjoy the back roads. My bus will do 65 but that would be an absolute maximum and the motor wouldnt last long at those revs. It likes to cruise on 55 without much of a load on but i keep it at at 50 so as not to overwork it.

Today i was pondering the possibility of swapping out the auto B/W35 trans for the Aisin/Warner 4 speed. But i guess i like the whole original Commer experience, just like it was in the day:D;).

My bus can get up to 60 with a bit of a run up but as it's a workhorse and usually completely empty, it sounds like it's going to rattle apart. Even after spending a fortune on sound deadener and putting in plywood paneling it's pretty grim. My poor beautiful engine. Cruising speed is 50mph for me. The speed limit is 60 but people flaunt that constantly. It's why I sold my harley recently as the drivers over here are simply too aggressive.

I'm surprised you can get up to 50 with that load, proper workhorse:D
It sounds like you're going to have trouble with other drivers no matter what you drive:(

I Thought this was a COMMER site....
That looks more like a MORRIS traveller with all that wood....

It doesn't matter what you are driving, there are always idiots who have to be in front. I was driving from Mildenhall to Bury in the XK8 the other day and was following another car through a 30mph speed limit. As we emerged from the speed limit, the car behind me (which did not like doing 30) overtook both me and the car in front on a blind bend. Fortunately the car that it met head on and the car it was overtaking both took evading action and a very nasty collision was avoided. We soon caught up with it again when it came up to the next slower cars. Unfortunately, this is the cause of most deaths on our rural roads in Suffolk.

Think he was looking at year of manufacture on the log book....78?... Lol
Cheeky Sod! She's a '72. It was foot to the floor, downhill on the M4. She was shaking like nobodies business! She still slowed to about 45mph at the top of the next hill though!

Managed 67, downhill once.... Never again. Got a "tank slapper" on when the front wheel dropped into the truck ruts on the m62
