Hello

Hi all!
Just found the forum and a complete N00B when it comes to campers.

I dont own a commer, but am thinking of getting a camper van soon for various trips.
The Commer and VW campers stand out to me. The commer seems to have a cheeky character and the vw is the "norm" when it comes to old skool campers.

Any suggestions on how much I should be willing to pay for a good condition commer camper that I can take on trips to devon etc?

Buying cost,
Insurance (22 with 4yrs ncb)

I'm after one with a pop top, same sort of size as a type 2 VW camper.
Preferably without requireing a load of work.

I will try to keep active on the forum as much as I can

Regards

Matt

Hi Matt and welcome. You should expect to pay 1/4 of the price of a VW, for a Commer. In other words, £2000-2500 should get you a really nice one. But happy hunting, as they are thin on the ground.

hi matt woolfy here if your looking for one that is in top condition i think you will be waiting quite a long time ,like martin said they are getting very thin on thr ground. my advice is to buy one cheap off ebay and then do it up to your own tastes,im bidding on one now on ebay its in the classic car and parts section ,its green and white i think but the good news is that its cheap £150.00 was the reserve price, you can have it if you want it ,as im only bidding because its cheap. and dont worry about the body panels that might need to be replaced as i can get any of them made for you, my numbers 07941 906259 or 02476 75 8814, if you need help or assistance with anything.(go on break the mold and be different sod the splittys.)

Hi Matt, im new to Commer vans myself, just got myself a Highwayman.I think it looks better than any VW....prices of parts as well is a lot cheaper.I couldnt of got a VW in the condition mine is for the money i paid for mine either!.
The insurance for mine is not bad either, im 36 and have had a qoute for 130 quid fully comp, not bad considering i have no NCB.

:D

Patience is the thing. I too regularly trawl EBay for anything Commer and over the passed couple of years along with the abandoned projects and those needing 'a little TLC' there have been a few absolute gems passing through. The small ads in various mags, Classic Van and Pick-up for example, sometimes comes up trumps and joining a relevant car club is also a good way of finding the 'right one'. One of the links from this forum is The Classic Camper Club, might be another good source of information. The advice that is usually given to anyone buying a classic of any sort is to go for the best you can afford, and as Martin has said Commers are are much cheaper than the more common VW and you get a lot of van for comparatively little money. That said if it was me I'd probably buy a complete shed and keep Woolfy in beer money for years by selling me panels.

Good luck, if I see anything I'll let you know.

Thanks for all your replies.

Woolfie I will keep your contact details handy, just in case.

What are mechanical parts like to get hold of etc?

I haven't bought anything for a while but I found most bits were available. Google 'Speedy Spares' and check out their catalogue.
