Heater Matrix - Resolder?

Hi all,

I've tested the heater matrix on the Spacevan by plumbing it back in without all the surrounding parts and it's leaking.

It seems to be from the tank seam rather than the core (see photo), so I found this older post that implies it may be possible to re-solder the seam - http://forum.commervanfan.co.uk/index.php?threads/drip-drip-drip.4018/page-6#post-74836

I've a friend who's soldering is much better than mine who's quite happy to have a go - Is it likely to be a suitable permanent solution?

Looks like a fairly easy fix, just need to make sure everything is spotless and a nice big bar of plumbers solder

It's quite possible to resolder the seams. I did it and it's been OK.

Here it is on my thread. http://forum.commervanfan.co.uk/index.php?threads/jennings-restoration.7437/page-4

I found it was best to warm the whole thing up to about 100C with a hot air gun first. Not too much or it could all fall apart! Then I used a 150W soldering iron and plumbers "Everflux" to clean out the muck. Then added some extra plumbers solder. The soldering iron wouldn't work when the matrix was cold.

It is important to put the matrix back in the right way up, and to get the pipes from the engine the right way round or it won't work. On mine, the pipe with three ridges is the flow connection and goes at the bottom. The pipe with two ridges is the return and goes at the top. The two ridge pipe is longer inside the matrix and goes right up to the top corner so that when water comes in the bottom it drives air out of the top.

Good luck.

Hi i had a hole about the size of a penny in my moggy minor's radiator (a result of enthusiastic excitable starting handle removal when it actuaĺy started!).
The radiator us copper so i cut out a patch from a cat food can and soldered it on with a domestic soldering iron. I made sure the solder joint was worthy and righteous. It's been like that for 3 years now so i'm thinking it's going to remain ok until i accidentally smack it one with the starting handle again

Our current fleet:
triumph stag (2500s engine conversion so it can be used as though ut was a car)
moggy traveller (pic is as at our wedding 2014 but currently off road cos the wood needs work)
my wife mel has a 1969 moggy 2-door which is being restored by local garage
and just over a week ago we bought a commer pb bus which we're turning into a simplified camper (hence me trawling the mechanical posts to learn up on & enthuse about commers !) ☺
we also have a nissan micra 'just in case'

The moggy ("monty") has an hif38 carb with heated manifold ( both by prev owner) and 3.9:1 diff. Seems to work quite well! Its not particularly slow and cruising at 'same speed as everyone else' is fairly easy ☺

Nice cars:cool:
Ted the traveller is well documented on here since we got him

Just fitted an alloy inlet too with a HS4 carb - and a Midget exhaust manifold, goes very well and pulls a 3.7 diff:)

Nice3! My traveller looks a bit worse for wear these days but still very ioerational apart from the wood thing.
Are those van wheels? They look more purposeful than mine

Ted's paint is looking a bit shabby just now:(
Not van wheels, they're a bit wider at 5 1/2" but I've had to take them off as one was cracking around the stud holes:eek:

:D Dead lucky got it very cheap, less than what a good 4.2 is fetching
I always bide my time and wait for the bargains;)
