Please tell me I am wrong , , the second photo shows what's under the white outer covering , the black bit inside feels like normal wire insulation , the outer white covering feels like a hard substance , If it is asbestos I am cooked because the dust in the van is lots ,

I don’t know much about old wiring in our vans but the only way to be sure is to get it tested. Looks like tests start at £50. Needs to be done at a UKAS lab. Good luck.

I've never seen wire like that in a van how much of it is there, is the dust you mention all from the wiring?. If you suspect asbestos then mask up, damp it down with a water spray and remove the offending wire and replace it with new. Double bag it and dispose of it.

Thank u for ur reply , what a nightmare , I must find out who tests it in Ireland , OMG ,

Hi panky it's like someone added another interior light and used the wire I think i donr know if it's original wire and was rebooted or ,I,t's being hanging in the middle of the van since I got it , now I am paroniad with the interior seats ect , EFF it there is not much I can do about it now if damage is done it's done, that's me talking after a few bottles , anyway thanks for the advice , really appreciate it , no the wire has always being in that condition and the van has 63yrs of dust inside not all from the wire

Don't panic, you've most probable come into contact with asbestos many times and not realised. It was used in everything in the not to distant past so there's bound to be some hanging around. Be sensible about it and use reasonable precautions, cut the wire out and isolate it from the atmosphere, dampen down the dust and hoover it away then bag the hoover bag up with the wires you removed.

Thanks panky , the worse thing I done is Google about it , as I have mentioned before I am OCD about chemicals ect , we used lemons bicarbonate soda ect for cleaning and I am in my 50s , at the moment I am outside the local off licence feeling like I,m covered in it , You are right about being sensible and dampening down and cutting it out , , I hopefully will calm down in a few days and get it sorted , the van has cloth seats bedding ect and are full of dust no matter how many times I have tried to get the dust out , i will take precautions and remove it and hopefully get to enjoy the van , The worse thing is in Ireland it's a summer's day and I was cleaning the van and as soon as u moved anything inside you could see the dust in the air , anyway thank u panky , Do u think I should dampen down the whole van

Dust is just dust, clean the rest of the van as you would normally it's doubtful that the whole van is contaminated just the immediate are under tha suspect wiring. You can get car upholstery wet vacs which will do a good job of the soft furnishings.

Like Panky said. If you want to be extra cautious get yourself a couple of those disposable white suits and some disposable gloves then you can bin them after each use then you won’t transfer the dust from van to clothes to house. It’s unfortunate but I would treat it like asbestos and remove it and give the van a good clean. I personally wouldn’t get it tested in case you then have to spend a fortune getting specialist people in to decontaminate. Seeing that you’re sensible and intelligent you would do the job just as well and protect yourself no lesser than they would.

Thanks for ur reply , I agree with everything u have said but unfortunately I have been in the van for the last few years , I never paid head to the wire even thou it was hang down across the middle of the van , it was tied up threw the handles that you use to lift the roof so I have moved it a good few times to lift the roof up , if its asbestos I have been in contact with it many a time so any damage from it has been done , I have UNFORTUNATELY had most of the seats ect from the van in my living room so , UNFORTUNATELY I dont know if I can feel comfortable in the van anymore even after a clean, , maybe in a few days I might feel different but for now I dont think I can , maybe I am over reacting my house is well contaminated if it is asbestos , I am a hoarder of vintage things so there is no chance of me cleaning it out of my place unless I throw everything out

Well it’s your decision :) . It’s bad but it’s not anthrax nor is it the horrible blue asbestos. It’s the poor workers who spent years lagging pipes cutting sheets etc with the stuff.

I know soupdragon it's sad but i i dont know if i can sleep in the van and feel comfortable ,I am a worrier and can 9nly relax once I dont see the problem anymore , what drew my attention to the wire was Ibought a vintage electric fire and was told the wiring could be asbestos by my nieghbour , so I got rid of it then I was cleaning the inside of the van and noticed the wiring that was in the fire looked similar to the wire in the van whilst cleaning the van , it may not be asbetos but I have done enough damage if it is , i have brought the fibres into my family home and that's what upsets me , I know I may be over reacting . Anyway there's test kits online that u can take a sample and send them off and u can get results in 48 hours Do I want to.know, NO. but if iam to drive it camp in it I need to know ,, love the van but health has to come first , any way thanks for all u help , the one good thing to come from.this is meeting u all and I really appreciate all the help and comments ,, I may calm down in a few days , thanks soupdragon

I did look on google and it was used sometimes for heat proofing wire in high temperature areas like your heater. It sounds like you are probably going to get it tested and fingers crossed that someone didn’t somehow have the uncommon wire lying around to put in the van. Good luck :)

Thanks soupdragon , I am only c
Coping the Irish way , get hammered and everything seems fine

Panic over it's cloth lined 1960 wire common with a rubber underneath. I have rewired old cars and removed this stuff it was a heat resistant wire that will be breaking up as cloth does.
Thanks for ur imput I really appreciate it , I pray u are right , you have eased my mind a bit , once again thank u ,
