Head Gasket - Jointing compound or not?

About to put the reconditioned head back on Babs tomorrow - Just wondering whether or not to use a jointing compound (I have some wellseal). The big Rootes manual says not to use compound..... do I?

The HG supplied by Speedys is not the standard copper type, but a multi-layered one.

Shouldn't need to as long as all the faces are OK - and your cyl head will be pristine[^] Just make sure the block face is nice and clean.
I've never used anything and the only failure I've had was on the Mini - cheap gasket:I

Its 6 and half a dozen really, as Panky say,s if the deck is flat............ then again it won,t do any harm, but with C.I its not so essential :)

NO NO NO! Never use sealant if its not recommended by the manufacture, and Rootes dont recommend it. It can actually block oil and waterways when you torque the head down and then restrict the flow of coolant and lubricant and then guess what happens! Just make sure all surfaces are spotlessly clean and no traces of rust oil or old gasket anywhere.
 
Thanks. I guess I'll just clean up the block and stick the head on then. The head is lovely and pristine, and now the exhaust manifold has been on a belt linisher, it's flat once again.

Right, I'll get back to writing the route notes for the scenic run in a couple of weeks.

I'd use the thinnest film of Weelseal that you can put down. On the block face and the head face. Wait until it's tacky then drop the h/g onto the block and the head onto the gasket. It won't block any oil or waterways if you use it sparingly.
