Head gasket gloom.

I'm still waiting for my bits to arrive.
Can't put my head back on without a new head gasket. Should have been here today :(

Have you had the head pressure tested for internal cracks? Its worth having done while the head is off as something has caused the head to be taken off before !

Bloody Commer`s!

Van Fixed and I have now covered 40 miles with the her testing it out.Sins doing the head gasket she hasn't boiled over nor loose any water. When the engine is ticking over it sits at the half way mark on the gauge, and steady driving it stays at that point. When climbing a hill or flat out doing 40mph + it goes up the gauge and hovers just under the red. When you return to the flat or a steady speed the gauge recovers to just over the half way mark. I now have to questions If anyone knows.
Are the gauges different between petrol and diesel?
if so I can guaranty it is still a petrol temp gauge.
Also I broke the sender getting the head out from the impossibly small gap. In haste I had to fit a Rover V8 sender for a range rover classic. I am of the thinking that a 12V sender is the same as the next. If it fits in the hole It will do the job. Am I wrong?

Firstly YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS:D excellent news. As for the senders I would guess the gauge needs to matched to it but it sounds like the Rover one isn't far off. I'd try a Commer petrol engine one - after all it was a petrol engine van originally so the gauge should match it.

Great job and result.:DThe temp rising on hills sounds like a rad issue to me, although its not blocked it could be deteriorating cooling fins. Sounds like your gauge is working fine, even if the gauge for petrol/diesel are different, i don't think you should see such a dramatic rise in temp on hills.
I would also re-tension the head bolts after 500-1000 miles.;)

Great to see pics of the diesel,
Thanks

Senders are matched to gauges, but it sounds like you have it about right.

Today was an interesting day. Ironically after popping off to buy a new fan belt as the one on the van is a bit to long. I broke down on my return journey as the fan belt snapped. She got very hot very fast lol.
Anyway to aid cooling I turned my air scoop over and bolted that back up. I did this Monday night and been running around with the van sins. It still sits a bit high on the gauge but it is no longer moving up towards the red like it was. I suspect it was/is an air lock issue. That, and just a generally neglected/clogged up cooling system.

It helps to have the heater tap permanently on as the matrix is part of thee cooling system. And you can also plumb in a bike rad in the heater return line :)
