Head gasket differences

I ran into an odd issue today. I have a series 5 1725 with an iron head and a blown head gasket. I ordered the new gasket and it doesnt really fit. It fits the holes but the flame rings stick into the bore on cylinders 2+3. Is there somewhere i can get a proper gasket? And wondering why they sell the same head gasket for all series 2 through 5?

The bore is the same on all engines so capacity shouldn't make any difference, could be that the gasket supplied is just poor quality. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the iron and alloy head gaskets but the bore is the same so that should at least line up. I think I've got one of each on the shelf, I'll take a look and compare later.

OK I compared the two types of gasket and there is a distinct difference because of combustion chamber shape. I tried them both on an alloy head and the iron head gasket does overlap the chambers

Top one is alloy for head

So it looks like either the Alpine head combustion chambers are different to the standard iron head or yours has been modified at some point, probably a gasket for an alloy head would do the job.
Hope this helps

I did fit a 1500 gasket to a 1725 by mistake once and when I started the motor it sounded like there was a nut in the combustion chamber . When I removed the head and there was nothing in there , I discovered my mistake . Live and learn .

Apologies, the 1600 and 1725 are the same so Nate could well have been supplied with a 1500 gasket

Lol my friend put 883 head gaskets on his 1200 harley motor. That sound is indeed frightening and crazy. I think i have it sorted. They did not sell any iron head sunbeam alpines in the usa , only aluminum heads so the rootes group vendors mostly only sell the one type. They did however sell a sunbeam (commer) funwagon here which had an iron head, but not in numbers to justify stocking the gasket . Anyway i found which is supposed to be the right gasket

Not really. Found the problem. There must be a crack inside the head between the heater channel and the exhaust runner. Zipped it all back up. Same as before, no water in the oil etc but loads of white smoke, and WAY less when the heater tap is closed
