I think your right Woolfy, My m8 has the most hanging LDV speck. They don't MOT that as its classed as a recover vehicle. It's worth looking into. Law has probably changed recently tho, always the way when you find a loop hole :-0

The question is do you want to drive round and kill yourself or someone else in a rust dangerous wreck!
If a car or van doesnt pass the mot it shouldnt be on the road, thats my view i know some mot stations are anti classic car as they dont understand them but driving something thats hanging is just wrong.[V]

Even if you don't need an MOT, surely it has to be roadworthy and road legal. What do those in the know advise?

I don't think Woolfy or any other responsible person would consider running a dangerous vehicle MOT exempt or not. An MOT only shows it was roadworthy at the time of the test, if you drive out of the MOT place and get stopped with a failed headlamp you could still get done same with a vehicle that is exempt from the test - everything has to be roadworthy if it's on the public roads.

Recovery vehicles is a very grey area, we looked deeply into last year when a Foden recovery truck was up for grabs [B)]

MOT exempt if it is solely used for recovery and not a vehicle transporter. VOSA know this and are all over them like a rash, so of course it has to be roadworthy. There is something about being limited to within a 50 mile radius of their base, and needing a tacho after a certain time. Technically it,s illegal to drive unless you are actually on a recovery mission [xx(]

Don't start panicking guys, and sending out the wrong suggestions or hit guys, I was just wondering if it would be non mot compliant, that was all. I've never driven a dodgy motor or commer as you can see by the vans we have done . As I agree with what John said entirely , I wouldn't want to live with the guilt all my life if I injured someone needlessly. Im not going to lie, I do like the look of these old ratty looking cars and vans, but only if they have been done correctly and are safe to use. Trust me, as rare as this old canopy pickup is, if it ain't savable or is far to much outlay, it just won't be done. At least not by me, unless I either Win the lottery or someone goes halves on the ownership and costs involved.
