Has it been done

as alot of you know i WILL get a commer soon lol. but i want to do something a bit different as alot of vans are standard or have v6 mods:). i saw one on here with a vauxhall engine (cant remember who's) and it got me thinking. has anybody fitted a turbo engine in one? i was thinking sierra cossy but i think it would be to big for the engine bay. so im thinking i might try to fit a standard 1600 s2 escort turbo engine with a 1.8 sierra gearbox. what do you all think, is that a little TOO mad for the madhouse?

Anything is possible but there's no substitute for CC's[8D]

Both HUT & JAY have Vauxhall lumps, A cossie lump will fit, just have to put the turbo in a suitable place. Fontaine has a 2L pinto lump in the STD engine bay.
As Panky says, CC,s are everything :p
Nothing is too mad for the madhouse :D;)

How about a flat 4 in the back.... or a flat 6 ;)

or one in the front and one in the back.

or even a mid mounted renault 5 turbo setup

actually scratch that ... do this....

yeah at min. but only because i would have to drive round without a windscreen to get air to the supercharger:D besides i was thinking either rs turbo or transit di. i can just picture it, some twit at the traffic lights revving up his saxo to impress the birds, then suddenly with a mighty roar and a hiss from the dump valve. my commer leaves him at the lights. and everyone laughs :D:D:D

Nah, that's just daft - you'd have to carry two spares and how will the bed fold out?

Some of you people just don't think things through, do you?

lol, thats why i want a turbo engine, that way the bed will fold down as normal and as it a 1.6 i wont need the extra spare. just a small fuel tanker to follow me

Probably the easiest upgrade is to fit an alloy 1725 engine, which gives a good increase on power, and as it's basically the same engine - doesn't give many issues fitting.

I will be doing this conversion on Babs, and I hope it will make the van capable of towing a small trailer with my Imp on it. If it is not, then I will be going down the route of fitting a diesel engine, probably a Peugeot or GM lump. However, my aim is to get more torque out of the engine, rather than increasing speed or acceleration. I personally don't think the Commer is that suited to high speeds. It's not the best handling design around - and I reckon 70 is about as fast as I am ever going to want to go.

The biggest issue with fitting a new engine is the size of the space available. Many modern engines seem to be a lot wider than the older ones.

That's my 2p worth

very true. i love seeing an origanal setup, but i can spend hours looking at how people get around problems when upgrading. truth be known i think any more than about 60 would be scary in a commer but its not the speed im thinking of, its more the reliability and the fun. gotta get a commer first but i can dream lol;)

50? 60? [:0][:0][:0]

In all seriousness, Peggy is perfectly fine cruising at anything around 60-70 and has managed 78 downhill etc. This all on a standard Commer engine. Andy's right though, much more than 70 in a Commer isn't going to be much fun for long. Low and mid-range torque is the important thing in my view.

I'd love to fit a GM 2.5 TD engine and gearbox with a Rover rear axle.

Aah transplants... Custom van people have been doing that for many years, started in the 70s. The trick is to know what you want to use it for. Camper vans are about torque and pulling power, so basically the larger engine has always ruled.

The yellow CF is running a 440 chrysler (7.2 litre) pulls a caravan to the drag strip and then goes drag racing. The blue ford Thames ran a rover v8, and also used to pull a caravan. The Ford transit runs a 5.7litre chevrolet and the red oxide Thames at the rear runs a ford V8 (this is an out and out racer & is trailered to the strip) Diesel technology has come on a long way and nowadays there are some really good engines out there- you just have to be a computer whizz kid to wire them up!

All these vans started off with very humble beginnings and are now having a happy retirement!

Tim - we really need the Commer equivalent out there........make it so[8D]
