Evenin' all. Just got back fron a weekend away in Harvey. To say the weather was good is an understatement[8D] Our first trip out was to our old favourite Church Bay on Anglesey, a place we always go back to. Harvey did misbehave unfortunately, during a two hour traffic jam we hit when less than ten minutes from home[V] It was really hot and the queue stretched for miles, we passed various moderns with their bonnets up on the hard shoulder of the Weston Point Expressway (how ironic) and I was keeping a close eye on the temperature guage as the fan cut in and out as it should. About an hour into the jam the tick-over started becoming erratic and I had to keep blipping the accelerator to stop the engine from stalling - but eventually it died and wouldn't re-start so I manouvered onto the hard shoulder cranking the starter while in gear to move forward. The engine wasn't overheating so I checked the things I could reach - plug leads all on, wires still connected to coil, rota arm looked OK and there was a spark at the plugs. I reckoned it was fuel vaporisation and this was confirmed when after about half an hour the engine burst into life and ran fine again. We rejoined the traffic but this time I switched the fan on manually and left it running, this seemed to do the trick and we spent another hour stop-starting before we cleared the roadworks that were causing the problem - two vans parked and the drivers watching an excavator dig up undergrowth that was well away from the road - the traffic had been filter down to one lane at a busy round a bout for this[!] The OD packed in soon after so our progress wasn't as rapid as usual and it was dark by the time we got to the campsite. The next day was spent just basking in the sun and generally chillin out with cold beers and good grub but I did manage to trace the cause of the OD issue - after checking the wiring I found the fuse had blown in the relay I had fitted and I didn't have a spare. No sweat a couple of strands of copper wire, stripped fom an odd piece in the toolbox, and wrapped around the duff fuse worked a treat[^]
Sunday turned out to be just as nice and a walk down to the beach finished off the day nicely before it was time to head home, I settled up with the very nice lady who runs the site and the weekend cost the princely sum of £10 - it's great but all you get is grass and a tap.......and the view[8D] Coming back we hit another jam caused by roadworks (this time proper ones) on the A55 at LLandulas - 5 miles of clutch slipping hell[V] this time I switched the fan on straight away and the two hour nose to tail grind was completed without incident - that was until we cleared the snarl up and.....no overdrive I'm wondering if the solenoid is breaking down under the heat and when it's engaged for the first time after enduring such a long hot crawl it pops the fuse, either that or it's my dodgy wiring:I Still we all have out little problems but even without the OD Harvey performed well and got us home safely[^] But I'll need to sort it out before South Wales.

Not too unusual for it to splutter a bit in hot traffic, just keep that fan on

Can't remember, it was a relay I got ages ago when I was considering fitting spotlamps to my old Herald - I think it was about 10amp. It did blow three strands of thin copper wire second time around:I Never had trouble with it before but I did blow the fuse on the gearknob switch once when the wire chaffed against the housing at the bottom of the gear stick - but that one was OK this time.

Hmmmm, could just be a glitch, try going over the wiring, could be chaffing.Or maybe the solenoid is getting weak. 10 amp does sound a bit low though [?]

The fuse is a swine to get to without taking the side cover off the engine compartement so I'm going to fit a remote blade fuse holder in a more accesible position, at least I'll be able to change it easily when it blows again:I On the other hand I might just fix it properly
