Not long back from a great weekend at Church Bay on Anglesey[8D] Weather was fantastic, food was excellent (I cooked
) and Harvey behaved impeccably[^]
In the twilight Harvey was reunited with his original awning for the first time in my ownership.

The next day dawned with clear blue skies[8D]

We were stuck in traffic jams for over three hours on the way there but no over-heating[^] The fan cut in and out as it should but did come on occasionally up long hills, I think I need to improve the air flow through the radiator, I moved it forward about three inches to get the lekky water pump in so I think it needs re-doing to get the rad back in it's original position. We took the A55 through North Wales and there are a few killer long hills on the way - one in particular, Rhualt Hill, holds memories of struggling up in second, engine screaming barely making 20 mph - Harvey did it in OD 4th (55mph) on the way there and 4th at 50mph on the way back[^] quite a difference

Definitely a success, a brisk shove instead of gentle persuasion is how I would sum up the improvement in acceleration but the pulling power is in a different league, except for the traffic jams I only got out of OD at roundabouts Cruising at 60 is easy and you can still hold a conversation.
Still haven't sorted the carb out, as well as running rich there is still about another 20% throttle movement to be had.

Thanks Colin it does look period doesn't it[8D] that's coz it is
Hi Baz, I was thinking of experimenting first with cardboard deflectors to see if I could improve things and then make something permanent but if it is just a matter of adjusting the bottom hose to get the rad back in the right place it could be a simpler option. It is nice to have that extra space behind the rad though, makes it easier to get to things.

Your awning looks just the part,
I want one now, we should have had one of the ones form Cambridge, I don't suspose Martin wants to part with it now???

When I last had a look under the engine cover the existing panels just seem to 'deflect' the incoming wind generally towards the rad. Ideally you need to fabricate 'sealed' ducting so that the wind can only go through the rad. This is something I may look into at some point as the temp tends to rise at high speeds (if you can call 65mph+ 'high'). [)]

looks really good, always interesting starting off after a few years laid up. Buttercup hadn't run seriously for about 4 years when I brought her back from Jules place. 90 miles round the M25 was a fun way to get her going again.
Cooling them had always been interesting I now have an electric fan as part of the refit and it does cut in if the engine is under load and getting a bit hotter, like up the long drag on the M25 from j7 to j8.

Got stuck in the mother of all jams on the way back but Harvey kept his cool[^] We did pull over after a couple of hours crawling along in first gear to give my numb backside a rest - those Autosleeper benches aren't the comfiest:I We pulled up behind a red Punto that was obviously having problems - the bonnet was up, water all over the floor, steam rising and two little ones squirming in their baby seats in the back. The young lad and his wife were gazing forlornly under the bonnet and I didn't thing the 250 ml spring water bottle the girl was holding would be quite enough for their needs so I offered what we had left. Their fan had packed up and, stuck in traffic, the obvious eventually happened. Once the engine had cooled off and topped up they made their escape as the traffic flow speeded up - we didn't pass them again so I think they were OK. It did mean I didn't get another brew though:I
