'electricspares'

helpful.

Wow Hugh! no wonder you are called rootesgroup - sounds like you may own most of what is left!

Many thanks for the list, a veritable feast of Commers- if you have the chance to get some pictures and further details on forum, would love to see them.:)

Have been slowly compiling an image archive of Commer adverts a few of cover some of your fleet - if you were interested they are on

Collection still growing at the moment, hope they prove of interest.

Hi again Kes,

If you try the very fundamental typing in of my URLs within your address bar then I should hope that you ought to at least be able to gain access that way. Try either www.oldtruckspares.com or www.rootesgroup.com (which is obviously slightly shorter and has a link to the other one).

I'm off out for the rest of the day but I shall have a look at your images soonest when I get back.

I do have quite an archive collection of Rootes Commercial ephemera, books, brochures, service bulletins, adverts, toys, etc. but it's a fairly random collection thus far. I would say, however, that I could quote from a factory parts list that would cover just about every post war Rootes model up to the introduction of microfiche. The lack of microfiche info. is not such a big deal for the cars as it's mainly out of my era of interest but it could come in useful one day for the more long lived commercials, e.g. spacevan, Walk-thru (and then Dodge 50), Commando/Dodge 100 and Bantam.

More later.........

No joy on the access for pages, guess it was never meant to be - I look forward to reading all about it on the new owners progress thread.

I'm guessing that you may well have seen/collected most of my humble archive already but if there is anything in there that has a glimmer of interest I will be a happy lady[^]

If you have anything you'd like to put on there, all contributions are welcome and suitably attributed;):D[:X]

Sounds like your knowledge worth publishing if you had been so inclined, sure you have already considered it.

hi hugh
glad youve found it!
told you you would like it
some extremely interesting stuff on here and good people with great ideas,
agreat community to be involved in

Welcome Hugh & Steve, we messing with the big boys now!

between you both and Martin think you account for most of the commers in the country - when does the museum open?:)

Regarding the Commer/Karrier/Dodge archives, I do certainly hope to create some sort of museum eventually and I suspect that Steve will be thinking along the same lines but may be able to assign more space one day than I ever could. I also have a long term yen to create some sort of physical homage to the yard that featured in 'Hell Drivers' (and perhaps a reenactment society for scenes from that, and maybe other transport related movies). Hell Drivers is really Kew built 'Parrot Nose' Dodge territory not the later 'Rootes' Dodge era, 'The Lavender Hill Mob' is Austin K8 but I think there is an interesting Commer van scene in something like 'Oh Lucky Man' and probably many other sixties and seventies movies and TV series.

Will be nice to work out a way to understand this URL deficiency but I'm sure that I shall get there eventually.

One of my fleet that I forgot to mention is quite amusing considering that I also have an ex BT Spacevan (pro tem) and also one of their Dodge 50s. One of my major garden 'sheds' is really a Karrier Gamecock GPO Telephone Engineers mobile workshop in disguise. It's known to the POVC and it's safe in my custody but it would be a massive project to restore it, unfortunately.

I shall try to post under 'spares for sale' shortly and I also have a technical query but shall check previous topics as it may have been covered already.

And Kes, watch this space, as you would be very welcome to have some of my material in 'cyberspace copy' form, once I have seen the extent of what you have done already and where my stuff might fit in.

Thank you, marvellous:D have a few more to put on tomorrow

Hell drivers doesn't get a mention in forum topic below but does have some commers in the movies

hi there huge i dont know if martin maltas has offered you anything for the bt van yet but if he hasnt then i would like to make you an offer for it and give it a loving home how about £350.00 please let me know what you think cheers from woolfy.:p;)

I have just done it again! Long post without remembering to sign in and all gets lost when I hit send! Why is it that, when I don't need to, I 'cut and paste' the text to notepad, just in case, but when it would actually be really useful to have the text saved I don't bother?

So we shall have to go round again............. what I said was something like this:

Hi Woolfy,

Since we last spoke, nothing much has changed, but I have firmed up the position with the owner and should have the V5 later this week (however, he can't be sure that it's in his name, even after all this time, so the dreaded £19 fee might just come into play later).

Your offer is pretty much OK for one which should keep us all happy, especially with a bit of additional luck and a following wind for your journey to collect it. I had a suspicion from one or two posts here that some sort of sharing system might have been in the offing but I suspect that just the one committed owner/restorer may be the best solution in the longer term.

Many of my own bits and pieces might be 'up for grabs' at the same time but as a seperate deal, or deals. The BT van would be 'as found' (and no engine of course) but plus a pair of new lower wishbones which were purchased for it ages ago and also a selection of used bits which I think includes a windscreen. In addition, but again seperately, I must also have a selection of manuals, parts lists and handbooks for the PA/PB/Spacevan but need to work out which ones are 'swaps' before I start offering them to other owners via the forum or elsewhere.

I could get the vehicle ready to go at pretty short notice but, as I said above, I'm waiting for a visit from the owner to reunite it with some of the spares and the V5.

We could probably start planning collection arrangements now. The owner is some way down the coast from me but I'm sure the V5 could be sorted out within just a couple of days, if necessary. Getting the Spacevan out will be just a matter of a short push, or possibly winching or towing it a few yards to line up with the recovery vehicle/trailer, but otherwise I can't foresee any obstacles. My own spares are scattered about the place a bit but most of them could be found within a few days of searching around. Let me know your preferred timetable and I shall start the parallel activity at this end.

if thats what you want to do then im fine with that its just i hadnt heard from you or hugh about whats going on. if we do buy it together where will we keep it then, and how will we share it equally so both partys get to enjoy it as i dont fancy driving three hours up to yours every time i want to use it. sorry ;)

what are we going to do about this bt van then mart and hugh because someones got to save it otherwise it will just become another victim of the tin worm.;)

I could always rescue a few Humber spares and then bin the rest but I have always promised the owner that I would be prepared to let it go complete and also waive any theoretical 'rent' for its time standing on my premises. As far as I can see, it is surprisingly close to its original BT form and would be an amusing Commer to rescuscitate.

The only minor current obstacle is the delay in carrying out the final handover of bits and paperwork from the owner as he has had a few problems recently and can be somewhat elusive.

I shall chase up the owner again but there's nothing major missing from the van so it could almost go 'as is' with the V5 applied for, or sent on, later.
