you musn't see it as failure Ray...merely a learning process:D

like i think panky suggested, run a switched live straight to the solonoid and road test it (can't say enough though...only as a temp measure to see if it all works and ONLY switch on when in 3rd or 4th and make sure you switch it off during actual gear change from 3rd to 4th) at least then you will know if its either the wiring or inhibitor..

i will get out in the morning and take photos of my wiring and relay...i didn't bother before as panky posted the diagram



 
The J4 o/d is wired direct, no relay or inhibitor, and as i know to only use it in 3/4 gear, its no problem ;)

You know I don't mean it....... a definite love/hate relationship though!!

Checked all wiring again... and then switched the top section from my old 'box as the linkage was worn... still no good. No even getting power to the o/d solenoid. Will try the switched live feed to see if it at least works that way... not today though, need to do something else!

NO still not sorted out... still contemplating my next move. My f-in-law is an electrician so am hoping to get him here shortly when he is next available... maybe this w/e.

I can still drive her, and we are off to Mevagissey camping next thursday week... still need ti install new tv and CD player:p

Love Mevagissy, been there many times when I was younger[8D]

just remember that if it turns out you ARE getting power to the solonoid and it still won't work, then forget about the 'guide book' adjustments and just turn the adjuster nut clockwise a turn and try it again, then repeat....thats how I did mine in the end...good luck and enjoy Mevagissy....lucky sod:D



 
Right Colin, I have finally got the electrics sorted out... and have power to the solenoid which is 'clicking' when selected. :)(HOO-RAY!) However, the o/d is still not working![xx(]

It is chucking down here, so will try tightening the solenoid arm lock nut as you have suggested when it stops raining. I have already adjusted it to the exact instructions as in the manual, but this was before the solenoid was actually working.
 
Yes, and........ it works! - at last!:)

I did what you suggested and wound the lock nut up a couple of turns on the solenoid and drove 'Wilma' up to the garage for some fuel this evening... in the lovely sunshine.

I got into 4th on the A38 and gave the o/d switch a flick... nothing. Then......... about 2 minutes later it suddenly, unexpectedly 'lerched' into overdrive!! I can only think it had not been used for God knows how long, so was stuck. Anyway, I gave it a couple of miles, changing in and out of o/d and it seems fine! What a difference from 50mph in 4th!! Took her up to 70mph which felt really great.

The wiring was the real problem, with the single relay from Speedies not doing it. I have actually achieved the wiring circuit using 2 relay's?? - works fine.

So there you have it...... Off camping on Thursday. I am hoping to take 1 or 2 snaps of the various improvements I have made over the last few months and post them up.

Thanks guys... you know you're gonna do it, you're just not sure how long it will take!!

Like I said the main problem was the relay and the wiring diagram...? I'm not sure the relay from Speedies and the converted original wiring diagram work together...?? Once the solenoid was finally powered up, it started working after a mile or two.

Anyway off to Snowdonia on the 30th, that should be a good test!?!? 500 mile round trip [:0]

well done! glad you got it sorted in the end - it was worth it in the end wasn't it?!

I'm interested in how you finally ended up wiring up the solenoid(s). I binned my speedies relay and used an old original spec one in the end -its a bit rusty but it works.

don't drive around at 70 for too long though!

Thanks Rupert. I was just about to call you on Monday evening when it finally started working. I will have to scan in and email you the wiring diagram. I used 2 relay's in the end....?? - hey it works!

It did feel ok at 70mph, but maybe 65 would be better... alot better than 50-55mph last year all the way to Brecon!
