gearboxes/overdrives

For the cost of a new seal it's not worth it, you might end up doing it all over again with a puddle of oil on the drive instead of a few drips:I

Got Peggy up on the ramps at Andy's. She has a J type o/d. We've tested the wiring and 12v goes to the solenoid at the right times.
Should the solenoid be making a loud mechanical 'clunk'? At the moment all we get is a faint 'click'.

Also, we checked the current going through the solenoid at 1.74 amps. Is this sufficient? We believe it is supposed to be 2 amps but is 1.74 close enough?

Is there any adjustment on the J type?
To clean out the mesh filter behind the plate held on by 6 bolts do we need to drain the gearbox?

No it will be a faint click rather than a loud clonk..as mine is D type I'm not sure about adjustment or the draining to check filters.
I will look it up for you but watching a movie in a bit...someone else may of told you by then...I'll look in later mate:)

Hi Baz, the manual says that if the draw is less than 2 amps then the solenoid needs replacing, and yes you will loose the oil if you remove the filter cover.

Cheers John,
So the whole gearbox needs draining?

Looks like. The manual says to put a recepicle under the cover plate to catch the oil and then refill alowing time for the oil to run from the g'box to O/D:I

it all seems to work ok but I see in the notes Panky scanned My solonoid should be drawing 15 - 17 amperes

yes mate, but how do I use my meter to read amperes please?

Switch it to amps if it's got them:I or if you have an ammeter on your dash you could run wires from that:)

Its just a little thingymajig from work with a dial that you turn.....it has an Amps setting, but if I switch it to that it reads nothing ;-( ...I'll take a pic in the morning...as I say it (odrive ) works fine I just wanted to check the Amperes, I guess I seek perfection..........is that a bad thing?

Has anybody got a clearer version of the o/d wiring diagram they can email me please? (Self cancelling).

The one on BMM's blog is ok, but not too clear when printed out. I can't get my o/d to work so need to check i have wired it up correctly.

Thanks, Ray
