Gearbox question

Hi Panky, Mr Maltas....

You gentlemen were very helpful a few weeks ago, as I am having trouble with my gearbox.

Having taken it to a gearbox specialist in Cornwall... they have diagnosed the problem and have suggested I need a new input and output shaft, plus syncromesh on 4th gear.

My questions is: as I have a spare four speed standard box (no overdrive) could I use this to source the spares that I need..?? If not what shall I do..???

The input shaft should be OK as long as it's not off an Arrows series car (longer shaft) but check the size of the gearwheel attached to it as different ratios were used through the years - but the gear wheels can be swapped over. Early gearboxes also had a coarse splined shaft but you can get round this by using a suitable clutch plate. Unfortunately the output shaft is different:I You could either look for a second hand OD box as a source of spares or maybe someone on here has a spare:)
Pretty sure syncro bits are available from Speedies.

Ok... so to re-cap: The input shaft should be fine as the box with o/d drive was previously swapped for the original 4 speed box with no problems.

Output shaft.... so I need to get one from a old gearbox with o/d...? Will post on the parts wanted.

Will call Speedies tomorrow for syncro.

So it's the original four speed box, that's great but compare the input shaft gearwheel anyway. Just a thought, if you need to get another OD box to get the output shaft you might as well try it on the van before going to the expense of a re-build, you never know it might just be a good 'un:)

Great... a bit of progress. Thanks.

Not sure I will pick up a gearbox with o/d anytime soon... MM hasn't had one for awhile and not been any on Ebay. Where else can I source one from..?
