Gearbox Fun

Most people spend their bank holidays doing nice things. I usually spend mine in the workshop. Today, however, has been both interesting and frustrating in the same amounts.

I have two gearboxes, one from a 67 Sceptre - the old nice shape, not the Hunter type, and a donated commer box (thanks reg). Thinking about it, I could have just put the Sceptre box straight onto the commer with the overdrive, but forgetting I don't have the hunter type box with longer primary shaft, I set about dismantling the two boxes today.

First was the sceptre box. It went quite well, apart from one of the detent ball bearings flying off into the workshop somewhere. All in all, apart from the dirt, the box seems pretty straight. The nut on the mainshaft wasn't very tight, but that apart, it seems in good nick. Also had a date of March 67 on the side, which is pretty much the same time JOG was made. I got everything out of the box apart from the reverse shaft, and retrieved all the needle bearing from the layshaft and primary shaft - even though I could only find 22 of the primary shaft ones, and there seemed to be more than the prescribed 27 for the layshaft. I also managed to temporarily lose the woodruff key for what I asume is overdrive oil pump drive. Eventually found it on the floor. :)

Here are the bits all laid out.

Ideally, I want to get the reverse shaft out as well, but don't have the little bit of metal to wedge in the shaft to tap it out - anyone else got any tips for this. If I can manage this, I am going to blast the casing, as it's the one I am going to use.

Now to the commer box. I wanted to take this apart to see if there are any differences between the gears of the two boxes. Panky said that he had a different first gear on his OD gearbox, but I think that might be due to the box being from an arrows car, rather than pre arrows?

First problem was I couldn't remove the speedo drive - and no sign of any circlips. Ended up cutting it off, as the mainshaft is toast anyway.

Then I hit the problem of being unable to loosen the mainshaft nut. It's absolutely solid. I have a very large adjustable spanner, and even jumping up and down on that didn't shift it - mind you it didn't have a locktab either - so maybe it's been well lock-tighted in? So, that's as far as I got. I also couldn't remove two of the studs that hold the rear cover on - so I think it's going to be a problem box.

One other thing, I noticed that one of the selector forks was very different between the two boxes - the one for 3/4th gear. On the commer box it was much longer and beefier - the sceptre one being like the one in the WSM. Was this a later ammendment?

So, any ideas on removing the reverse shaft, and how to get this nut off the second box?

The nut isn,t l/h thread is it ?

You would have been better off just fitting the Sceptre box straight on. That,s exactly what we did for John,s Highwayman ;)

"You,re only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

I did consider the left hand thread, but checking the other box, it's not. It's just very siezed.

Tomorrow, when there are other people around, I will park a land rover on top of the box, and have another go.

I know I could have put the box straight on, but:

a. I forgot it was compatible input shaft
b. It was sitting a garden for 20 years
c. I always wanted to take a gearbox apart and rebuild it.

Whether or not it will work by the time I get it back together, I don't know - but I am going to have a try. To be honest, they don't look too difficult - unlike an imp transaxle, for instance.

At the very least I am going to replace the bearings anyway, and clean all the parts up in the blasting cabinet with some nice new glass bead.

Fliping heck your mad :p
Just put it straight in....dead easy ;)

By the way if you want to stay the same as Bernie your going to have to go shopping for another new set of wheels [8D]

Sorry I forgot to mention the detent balls[8)]
The reverse shaft should just tap out useing a dummy shaft, front to back, and if it's the right length every thing should stay in place on the dummy shaft to enable you to lift it out of the casing. I got lucky with the mainshaft nut and found a socket in work that fitted, a few sharp thumps with a hammer shifted it.
Not seen the different selectors before as the boxes I've worked on have all had the shorter type.

How refreshing

Sorry, I meant the reverse gear and shaft, not the reverse selector shaft. The WSM says to make a u shaped tool for it - which I don't thing I have the bits to make.

I used a big arse pipe wrench on my mainshaft nut with a scaffold pole for leverage. My hunter Haynes manual says that the beefier fork went in the overdrive box. You box of bits looks like mine did. Hopfylly my od box will go in this week. Have fun.

Never did that, looking at the WSM and thinking about it I must have left the reverse shaft in place as I didn't need to remove it - I certainly didn't make up the horseshoe tool.

Hmmm....I wonder why? I'm sure the two boxes I combined had the same selector - and I do have trouble selecting 3rd and 4th:I

Wait 'til Andy's finished and then decide, he'll show a blow by blow account with all the details:)
Anyway why do you need to strip the box, it's OD problems you're having isn't it?

yes sorry, i just tend to think of it as a whole thing rather than 2 seperate components.....I'm kind of looking forward to it :D

More interesting stuff.

Finally got the second gearbox apart today in the brief time I was down in the workshop. Ended up cutting the nut off. First of all cut off the mainshaft to get a 1 1/2" socket onto the nut, with an electric impact hammer gun (mains powered and usually shifts anything). Didn't budge. Got out a 3/4" drive socket and my large torque wrench (about a meter high that I use for torquing up imp rear hub nuts - with the same socket as on this gearbox!) and a large scaffold pole. Still no movement. So, ended up cutting off the nut.

So, now I finally have both boxes apart - there are some interesting differences. Firstly, there are two different gear ratios - on 1st and 4th. I spent a nice time counting all of the teeth on the gears and layshaft and the results are the reverse, second and third gears have the same number of teeth on both the gears and the layshaft - while on the commer 1st gear has 39 teeth and the layshaft has 15, while the Sceptre has 37 and 16 respectively. On fourth, the commer has 19 on the gear and 30 on the layshaft, and the sceptre has 20 and 29.

So what has crossed my mind is that I can either use one set of gears or the other, and can't really mix and match the two sets? As the gears are physically wider the more teeth they have, if I combine the Commer first gear with the Sceptre 1st Layshaft gear - they are not going to be very well meshed together?

So, I think I am going to end up using all the commer gears and layshaft and installing them into the sceptre box and mainshaft. The only issue is that the primary shaft on this box is thin splined, and I bet my clutch has thick ones! Joy!!!

Why did they have to change splines at some point.

One other noticeable difference is that the commer box I took apart didn't have a nut locking tab on the mainshaft nut, or the machining in the mainshaft for it to fit. At some point they must have started using locktight to secure the nut - which works well seeing as I couldn't remove this nut. I guess the commer box might be rather a late one?

I cleaned some of the bits in my bead blasting cabinet, and they came out all lovely and new looking - shame I didn't take any piccies.
