Gear problems.

Hi I was travelling home today, on my way home I couldn't select first or second gear. There was slight burning smell, but this could of been down to the wrong gear selection. The van seemed fine on the outward journey. It could be something in doing. On previous times when it's happened it's felt spongy on selection. Has anyone got any ideas.

Get underneath and locate the nut on the side of the Gearbox. Undo it and poke your finger in. ;) if you pull it back out with no oil on it fill it up.

I have had a go at getting the nut off the gearbox to check the oil, but I can't undo the nut. Has anyone got any ideas.

It is getting stuff undone that extends all the jobs :p Could try some WD40 and leave it for a while but probably just need more 'force'. Sometimes trying to tighten slightly first can help release things. If you make sure you have a tight fit with wrench/ratchet on the head could try tapping handle with hammer or sliding a pole over end to give more leverage.;)

Finally I've got it off, there is oil in there but i dont think its up to the top. Will it be worth topping it up?

You might as well while your there, put some 20/50 engine oil in until it starts dribbling out.

Check your front bush. Look through the grille to the left and see where the gear linkage rod goes through the chassis. There should be hardly any play in that bush. There is another one on the chassis rail where the linkage crosses over towards the gearbox as well. :)

Id check the clutch fluid too if still doing it after topping up gearbox...under a panel on the drivers floor. Also something to check is there's a link where the gear level attached to the selector rod...right below the gear level...you can get to it just under the car. The link has wire to hold it tight but can come loose massing up the gears...normally 3rd goes first but worth a check.

It is the master cylinder yep, if it is empty may need bleeding on the slave after too (the cylinder push rod on the gearbox) should be a nipple on it.

Hope ya well too, need to see them photos...I know you're a good photographer Andy :)

Hi Jim, I topped up the clutch fluid. But I couldn't find the link where the the gear leaver is attached yo the selector, or it's there but I'm not sure what it looks like.

There's two ways of getting to it one is to unbolt the the gearstick from the floor and pull it out and the second (i think) is by taking off the air scoop underneath...located directly under where the gearstick is. If the nut has loosened slightly it will affect the gear. Its a bit of a knuckle cutter and quite a frustrating job but easier than replacing the gear rod bushes.
