Gas conversion?- where does commers

Hi I live in Belfast and my commer (1977 dodge) is barely alive in Wales... [V]

Have been trying for some time to get it on the road (over a year - through phone calls and trips over) but the guy working with it has given up as now the engine has too.

Initially I was thinking of buying a recon diesel but am now considering a recon petrol and getting a gas conversion as would like to be as eco friendly as I can as plan to use commer as work vehicle as well as fun. Is this a good idea[?]

This is the only forum I have tried on (and I have tried)and am feeling v.depressed about poss of not getting this sorted! so please someone get back to me... Also if anyone has any ideas where I can get engine refit sorted - can get towed with AA so can be anywhere in England (within reason). Dodge is in Conwy, N.Wales.

It is just such a baron wasteland of classic camper know how over here... have had a VW for 2 years and its the same with that - everything is always on the mainland and there is very little scope for parts or help here. Sorry dont mean to moan[:(!](expert advise really needed!!!)

So all help truelly happily received
Cheers
Nick

Hi Nickers,
Had thought about gas conversion for mine as very knowledgeable fella down the road from us had said would be very straightforward for rootes engine and should be reasonably cheap if you find a second hand LPG system. If I can catch up with him will ask further details on the technical side but he's often out on call as specialist mechanic and usually in demand. My main worry about the conversion was how it would affect my classic car policy as a modification, the other being that although we live near the LPG full to the brim town of Milford Haven, there aren't many garages here that sell it so would have to make special trips to fill up.

Tempting though as I would probably use my van more if cheaper to run.;)

Hi Nickers :) I think the majority of the members of the forum although reasonable, and in some cases brilliant, weekend mechanics (don't shout you lot) have day jobs as well and couldn't realistically take on your project. Maybe you could contact woolfy as he does seem to have good contacts and is willing to have a go. I've trawled around and found a couple of LPG converters that may be of interest, one of the links shows converters in Shrewsbury and Belfast. Sorry I can't offer any more help than this and moral support :I

Thanks guys - good point about garage provision - will make some calls as bit of false economy if have to drive 80 miles to fill up - mind you as long as always have petrol back up - but still.. And re restoration Panky thanks especially - though really just want to get it over here now, but even to get engine sorted (and welding work)

Cheers again:)
