Hi I have just returned from a lovely weekend in my van. The fuse for my relay switch blew, it's 240amp. Is this correct and are they quite easy to get hold of?

Sorry that should of been a 250 volt, the relay is for a 12 volt 100 amp. I think I've got a short circuit somewhere, what's the best way to check where the problem is?

First thing to check is if you have disturbed any wiring during the work you've been doing recently.

That's what I thought, there's a red wire that goes under the steering column and a black wire, the black wire might of come dislodged or it was disconnected in the first place. Are there any wires by the front gear linkage that I might if disturbed?

I cant think of any wire in particular but you've had extra wiring fitted for the relay. If the fuse is blowing that quickly then it sounds like a live wire is touching earth somewhere, it could be a bare wire, a connection come loose and touching metal or a wire trapped. Are the battery connections themselves secure with noting touching them?

There some plastic material over the battery terminals, I put them there to prevent the terminals getting disturbed by movement. I have checked the wires around the relay and they all seem fine.

I'm afraid you are going to have to trace the individual wires to find the problem:I

Gonna start tomorrow, so I've got to trace the wires from the batteries to the relay and any wires that run to the steering column? What are the red and black wires that run by the gear linkage.

Still looking, there are a few wires that have bare wires where the casing has come away slightly. Not sure if this is causing the problem. Had a good look and apart from a few bare wires can't find much else. There's also a few bare wires on the battery terminals, don't know if this works cause a short. One last thing, while I was looking at the wired I moved the slave battery, when I moved it the live terminal sparked. Could this be the problem? I'm taking it yo a friend tomorrow so he can help me.

Yes, there should be no bare wires and sparks are bad!

Sorted, one of my bulbs had broken on the contact. It was causing the short.:)

It was nice to find the problem, I'm learning quick. I took my van for a nice drive, the gear selection is superb now.
