Fumes smell

Hi all I am getting choked out while driving and wondered if anyone had any tips or advice for keeping the fumes out of the van. Even if I have only gone about four miles I can tell the fumes have affected me for a few hours after. I have lifted up the engine cover and the seal doesn't seem too bad. Thanks Tich:)

seal might look ok but might not hit the contact area, if you clean the contact area & seal off, rub some chalk onto the contact area close the hatch and see if you get a trace of chalk all the way round on the seal. But on the other side of things if you have no Fuel Leaks, Exhaust blows or breather blows you shouldn't be getting hardley any fumes. of the engine

It souds like you have an exhaust leak or the fumes from the tailpipe are somehow finding their way into the van. If the exhaust and manifold are OK have you checked if there are any holes in the floor in the area of the tail pipe ?

I will have a look this evening and see what the floor is like. I have looked quickly when i bought the van and thought it all looked very solid underneath but i do think the exhaust is blowing a little bit.

The seal on my engine lid was removed, yet i dont get any fumes into the cab, just hot air!..you might want to check all exhaust jointing and the breather that runs from the rocker cover to the air filter housing.

Occasionally I start Harvey's motor just to hear it run but I made the mistake of running the engine with a knackered exhaust, engine lid open with me inside the van[xx(] Didn't take long for the fumes to take affect and I nearly passed out [:0]. Pleeease check everything and be extra careful (you've got me worried).

Progress report on fumes smell. I opened up the engine cover and noticed that the large connection pipe from the carburetor to the air filter was not connected also there are no other pipes going from the air filter system. After I had reconnected this with a jubilee clip I ran the engine and noticed fuel coming out from the end of the pipe connected to the carburetor and landing on the engine block. I then tightened up the jubilee clip and started the engine again. The fuel then came out of the other end of the tube that connected to the small fuel filter. I then tightened this up started the engine again and no fuel is dripping (more like running) anymore.
I went for a run in the van then for a few miles and the fumes didn't seem to be there. Any ideas if this could have been the problem?
Cheers Rich
