Fuel pump

Our Commer hasn't run in a couple of years. It turns over ok but won't fire. We've just been trying it but fuel doesn't seem to be coming through the line. I blew down the line and heard what sounded like bubbling in the fuel tank, can anybody suggest what our next move should be? Is there any other way to confirm it's the fuel pump which is to blame? Can the fuel pump be repaired?

This is an AC made pump that was fitted to loads of cars of the period so you should be able to find a NOS one without much hassle. They are a bit of a weak point and many folks replace them with an electric one and just blank off the hole in the side of the engine. You will most likley find the diaphram has split or the valves stuck open so preventing any suction. Also check that the needle valve in the carb hasnt stuck, another common problem. Drain the old petrol, after two years it will be really dead and will cause it to be difficult to get started at all.

Hillman, Humber, Singer, and lots of others i cant think of now. It was a pretty standard part for any Roots, Dodge, Crysler, vehicle of the time.
You should be able to get a repair kit fot it quite easly. I just googled and found this but its in NZ.

Yeah thanks I've just seen the repair kit on eBay for a tenner. Messaged the guy to check its ok for a 1500.

Hey gang quick update.

I haven't got around to sorting the fuel pump but tonight we set up a gravity feed straight to the carb and tried starting the engine. I simply could not believe how fast the engine started. It hasn't run for donkeys, the last time it did it took ages to get going. After several years of not running we bypassed the fuel pump and it started faster than I've ever heard a vehicle start. Literally the moment we touched the button it just fired up.

Here's a video, it's not of the first start but it's only a few minutes later and you can hear an engine that hasn't run for years.

Obviously it needs a bit of tuning and seems to be missing but I'm happy as pie.

The main reason I made this post though was to ask another question about fuel pumps. Do the 1500 and 1600 share the same type? The ebayer selling the fuel pump repair kits doesn't know what type it's for or anything so if anyone can at least make a guess I would much appreciate it. If nobody knows then no worries I'll give it a try, its only a tenner. Just thought I'd ask first.

There are 2 basic types, glass bowl and metal topped. Yours should have the glass bowl type ;)

That sounds right, the top is see through. Any idea how to determine what the eBay one is?
