Just wanted to let you know about our new front bunk. My mum kindly finished it off this week and it seems to have gone down quite well - the kids are going to be fighting over who gets to sleep in it!

Looks brilliant. I had a cab bunk in my first van - my son loved it. It was curtained off as a seperate room almost and left loads of room in the main part of the van for us - except for the travel cot that took up nearly all the galley area for the (then) baby daughter:I

its kinda canvassy chris, its quite thick and probably will be quite warm. I picked the colour to make sure it doesn't go with anything else in the van ;)

I have a front bunk but only the toddler can be put in it as the canvas is old and starting to rip.
I was going to replace the fabric with curtain material hoping that it would be strong enough but thin enough to stitch with a normal sewing machine. Did Mum need a special upholstery needle or anything?

Rory doesn't seem to want to stop growing - hes just turned three and hes in age 4-5 clothes! (think sloth out of the Goonies!) Megan's finger is much better now thanks - it actually healing up and the nail may stay on. Megan is keen to get back to school so she can freak her pals out ;)

they are darkside poles, they came with the roof bunks I got from JustKampers. I fitted some proper commer bunks in the roof and had the JK bunks spare - ripe for conversion to a front bunk. (by the way I still have one JK roof bunk spare if someone wants to make me an offer?) I had to cut about 1 1/2 feet of the poles - and the front one is a tad smaller than the rear one.

CommerJules, I had a crack at the sewing initally and we just used a domestic sewing machine and "strong" thread. Mum used the same (but she was better at straight lines!). We did go through quite a lot of research. We tried thicker (button) thread but it was a nightmare, the thread tension just went to pot, so we put strong "normal" thickness thread and did lots of runs up and down the bunk and its pretty good. We did use a standard needle (which was fine) but the button thread may have worked better with a bigger needle. I think practice and taking your time are the top tips.

PS Is it just me or is it quite hard to actually insert anyone into the front bunk?

Oliver was 3 is April... Rory looks alot taller than him...
Bunks look great... we have the brackets now, but need to sort the poles and canvas out now... So will be checking your link out :)
