Front brake snatching...

Hi all,

when I leave the van for a few days and then use it again the front n/s brake snatches quite violently the first time I press the pedal...from then on it is fine and the brakes work well. Has anyone had experience of this and a remedy?

As ever, any comments welcome.

Maybe a build-up of brake dust or surface rust on the drum. Only one way to find out.

Ran has a shoe lining that needs replacing it's a bit cracked & sounds like a similar description will be done for the mot though :p

Yori always snatches violently but usually evenly having been stood for more than 24 hours - we know to expect it now and as you say it soon goes away.

Do you use the handbrake or leave it in gear?

this is the same as we experience, very violent...can't be good. I always leave it in gear (in the hope it will make a positive difference), but it still happens...

Do you know if you have a servo? I wondered whether pumping the pedal to build up pressure would work but seemed to do nothing.

The short answer is I don't know what causes it but after one maybe 2 initial snatches in the car park it is fine so I don't worry too much
 
I used to have this problem with a Nissan Prairie, which would lock up one or both rear wheels at the first touch of the pedal. It was ok once the brakes had warmed up. The brake shoes were Mintex. I solved the problem eventually by changing the shoes to a different compound. I know racing cars have to warm up their brakes before they work properly, but I didn't fancy driving down my road everyday pumping the brakes (and weaving about to warm up the tyres of course). I don't know whether the Mintex brakes were meant to be high performance, but car certainly was not. :)
 
I had a Viva years ago and I can remember one of the rear wheels locking occasionally, found the cause to be a slight leak on the wheel cylinder creating a nice bit of grinding paste when the fluid was mixed with brake dust, very messy [xx(]

A common problem - I call it the Commer timewarp "with a jump to the left.." Have seen a few on here with the same problem and mine does the same - it's always worse if I have used the handbrake. Can solve it for a while but recurring problem so brakes need regular re-balancing

What did help with mine was getting a load of oil down the trunking that the handbrake cables from each front wheel meet and start traveling up together - they seemed to be catching there and contributing to unbalancing and snatching. Hope this makes some sense and proves helpful

Mine was known to do the 'timewarp', even after the MOT.You would pull of and brake gently and woah 'with a jump to the left'.
Having new cylinders/shoes and adjusters i found it a headscratcher..
Didnt do it all the time but it caught me out a few times, nearly headbutting the windscreen a few times! [}:)]
 
Mine failed the MOT for it when I first got her - same headscratcher as new bits fitted. Got the brakes to balance and through MOT but then went back to doing it next day:I

this is not unique to commers, had it in other old cars before, still not totally sure what to blame it on :( other than the government ;)
