flickering lights?

Hi there everyone in Commer world, This is my first ever blog thing on any forum or site, Some folk reading this will have met me, I have owned Oky Dokey [Jennings bodied P.B.] For ten years and been to Moffat show nine times, Oky winning the best commer camper and best in show on the same show! Those were the days.... Now therse so many Commers, and some real quality restorations, That there arnt enough cups to hand out! All good though and a great thing that a community has grown over the interweb these last few years, So good people, here is an irritating problem I have with my lights, They flicker and get brighter as the rvs increase? I have tried a new Alternator control box, nae luck, Tried the field bypass relay, nae luck, I have a new Alternator but will need to get an auto spark to fit it, the old one having several connections and the new one only three, Just though someone might have had the same problem? Hi Jimbo, welcome to the Madhouse!

Try cleaning up the earth points for the lights and then re-connecting them. Earth points can often corrode over time and reduce the ability of the electrickery to pass.

Fitting a new alternator is very easy and you don't meet to hire a auto electrician to do it. If you want help, let me know.

Although I would agree to sort out the earthing points for the lights first - 90% or more of electrical faults are earth related

Well hello Mr Sinclair and a big welcome to the Madhouse to you[8D]
Before you go fitting a new alternator check the connections are tight and the spade ends aren't about to part with the wires, it happened to me:Iand put a volt meter on the output to check what's going on. I also had problems with the dip switch but it didn't cause a flicker they just wouldn't work but you never know the contact inside could be arcing.

Thank you all kindly for your advice and welcomes!, I had already been told "earth is king" by a friend now based in U.S.. I cleaned up the earth strap batt to body vasalined it and refitted, so thats done I will go around the rest of the electrics and see what I can find, the dash lights flicker also?, so time to consult the big green book and look at the wiring diagram for earth points, Thank you all again, will let you know how it goes, Jimbo.

Hi Jimbo and welcome to the nut house

The rocker switch that turns the light on/off is not really spose to come apart, however it can if you are gentle...inside are 2 little brass pins and 2 strips of metal that make the contact when you operate the switch....well worth cleaning these up, they have given me problems with both of my vans...I guess over the years dust etc gets in there and builds up

Jim's is an early van with the ignition/light switch combined - nice try Saying that the connections on that type of switch have been known to come loose

I had to rebuild the ign/light switch on my 1970 dash because the lights were not staying on all the time when they were supposed to be. Not an easy job, but works fine now

You could try cleaning the switch with some spray cleaner
