Fitting SU carb

Cracking weekend over at Martins, I've got the sunburn to prove it:cool:
I had a similar problem with the filter on Bonnie, I dig out the pics of how I got round it.

There are elbows that are normally fitted to the carbs if used on a Mini and, with a little bit of help from a heat gun, a 3" plastic drain pipe elbow fits on nicely.

I held it in place with a big jubilee clip clamped up while the plastic was still warm and pliable.

My first attempt looked like this

A short length of 3" plastic drain pipe fitted nicely into a cheap aftermarket universal filter (came with a few sized adapters) but it kept knocking against the engine cover and fell off.
So Mk2 was born.

3" flexible trunking and the filter re-positioned in front of the rad with a bracket holding it onto the front air scoop. A bit tight getting the trunking through the gap at the side of the rad but it will go.

It's been like that for about four years now and hasn't fallen off yet

Cool thanks. I would need to bash about 10 or 20mm. And I put the cone in a vice and bent the filter bracket thing about a bit so reroute is preferable

Wouldn't the pancake filter option work? Mind you, you may be plunging yourself into the dark art of carb needles then:oops:

Did have a quick look at them but probably not got the room diameter wise. And now you’ve mentioned needles (didn’t even cross my mind).....no way lol

I’m getting a local company to make me a stainless thing similar to what you’ve made Commeracer. Got the gasket for template and dimensions of available space etc. Is it advisable to use 3in pipe or can I use smaller ie 2in?

I vaguely remember reading about air flow in pipes and that flexable (concertina) surface massively reduces and messes with air flow. So if I had smooth I could reduce diam a bit. Only thinking that or they will have to put a big spigot end on it and that would have to be a ‘cone’ rather than a flat end reducer? What diam is your pipe?

I used to run flexi hose with filter on it in front Of rad to get cool air but was told the same thing. Filter is back on the carb (with a Tim right angle mod) and I now use the hose to try direct cool air towards it from the scoop area

Cool. Thanks for the info/advice. Will investigate if can get semi flex smooth bore to get filter to front of rad maybe cheap Chinese copy silicone hose.

Got this made by the helpful local welding co. Tack welded to make sure it fits etc FFA3329F-5F46-4821-B4BE-BF58FB1C1BAD.jpeg
Looking to see what other silicon pipes I can get when I get the 60mm to route filter to the front of rad.... what’s this oneFED62BB0-F7C4-4E9D-A7C6-C34786B8656F.jpeg ? It’s connected to this 5F4EBE64-ED2A-4724-96C5-D203A202C406.jpeg which isn’t connected to anything???

The orange pipe is a botch with a bit of copper pipe and connected to heater by the looks of it. Does anybody know how long they are please ? I assume they are 15mm bore? As that’s what the copper pipe is? Thanks

You need 2 more holes in that flange. There is 2 above the mounting studs that allow the air above the dashpot to be displaced.

The thing in front of the radiator is a flame trap and won't be doing anything where it is. Originally it would have been connected to the pipe that you've shown coming off the rocker cover and then into the air filter so fumes could be drawn into the engine. The pipe from the rocker cover will probably drip a little bit of oil as the engine vents so needs to be low down and can be re-routed around your new inlet duct
