First Gear.

Hopefully that will do the job:) But if you do need to adjust the selector rod yes the little ball joint will pull out of the bracket once the nut is undone, you may need two spanners as the ball joint sometimes turns in it's socket when you try to undo the nut.

Thanks John, it does seem a lot better but I've said that before:(. The gear lever does seem easier to move across into the first gear position. Should I adjust the nut at the other end of the selector rod? My van certainly keeps me busy, soon be Frisay when I'm cooking a veggie curry and going to enjoy a few beers in my lovely commer.;)

No need to do both ends, the selector shaft is threaded both ends and turning one ball joint a couple of turn should be plenty.
Not a veggie myself but I do like a good meatless curry, and beer too - perfect

So if needed, once I've undone the bolt and taken out the little ball joint I can then turn the whole selector rod clockwise a couple of turns? So is there another separate ball joint on the selector rod? I'll make the veggie balti from scratch, using all the obvious spices along with chickpeas and spinach.

Could really do with a bit of chicken in there;)
I think there's a lock nut on the shaft up against the ball joint, slacken this off before you screw the ball joint down the shaft and nip it up again when you're done.
