*** FILM STILL NEEDS COMMER ***

Hi All, well we start shooting our Lake District scenes next weekend. As some of you know, the Camper Van is one of the main characters in our film. And we have been desperately trying to secure a Commer, rather than a VW. We thought we had secured Mike's wonderful van 'Rupert', but as most of you will know, he was badly let down by his restorers. So, we start filming next Saturday, 3rd November, and we finish filming on Friday 16th November. It is looking like we may end up having to hire a VW, but we would rather not, if we could still get hold of a Commer. We are on a ridiculously tight budget, but think we can offer £400 to anyone willing to let us use their pride & joy for our two weeks of filming. Most of all, we need a van that is reliable. We will be driving & filming it everyday in the Lakes around Keswick, and of course the weather will be pretty bad. But we also need the van to not be primary colours. We need more muted creams, greens... not reds, yellows. And we need a van that isn't too posh on the inside. It needs to look real. Lived in. There will be two drivers that need putting on the insurance. Anyway, it's a long shot posting this close to filming, but like I said, it will be a real shame if we end up having to use the inevitable VW ! Thanks, David.

Im not being funny and most us like to help out on here but you want someone to give you their van for two weeks, its got to be a certain colour,be reliable, not to posh inside, you want to put two people on whos ever insurace the van belongs to all for £400.

You must think we have all just fallen out the sky or had a heavy bang to the head. These vans are going up in value all the time, and most are more sentimental to our members than they are worth. So I think it will take more than £400 to hire one. I know that Mr Maltas used to hire them out but as to what the cost was I dont know.

How much is it to hire a vw?? Its got to be more than £400 for two weeks.

I really wish you all the best with your filming and im sorry if i sounds like im having a pop but im probably just saying what people are thinking.

A commer with even bigger boost will be appering on a screen near you soon!

Hi Jon,

I totally understand where you are coming from & I genuinly intended no disrespect to any of the wonderful Commer owners who frequent this forum. I myself bought one earlier in the year and know first hand how expensive these beauties can be to restore and maintain etc.

But I have to say, I think you would be surprised how many people have offered us the use of their prized vans for nothing. The rather wonderful Mike Parsonage, for example, would not hear of us giving him any money for the amazing 'Rupert'. He just loved the idea of his treasured Commer being in a feature film. I understand that not everyone sees the world like Mike, but for him, it had nothing to do with making money. And if his restorers had not let him down so badly we wouldn't be looking for a possible repalcement.

Again, apologies to you Jon, or any other Commer owners who are offended by my post. That is the last thing in the world I intended. The film is a very personal thing for me. It's about a man who loses his wife and what happens to him in the following year. And one of the main elements to this is him buying a camper van and going on a trip. The film is sinpired by my own life. My wife died 6 months ago. So I hope you can understand our film has nothing to do with making money etc. It's a labour of love.

We are not trying to take the mick. We only have a £10,000 budget to make the whole thing, which in film terms, is a ridiculously small amount.

I hope that explains a little better what we are trying to do.

Best regards, David.

sounds like a nice idea m8. i lost my mum a few years back to the big C and she was only in her early 50's :( i went through hell as we were very close (thats how dolly got her name) but i also watched my dad go through it and i wouldnt wish that on anyone. if dolly was done i would have loved to have her in a film :) i also wouldnt have asked for much if anything. although i would probably have asked if i could be there for the 2 weeks to help and just to be safe :) good luck mate

hi paul,

so sorry to hear about your mum. i also lost my mum to cancer in 2006 so i understand the pain you mention. and to watch your dad go through it must have been very painful too.

and many thanks for the offer of Dolly if she had been ready, that means a lot to me. and of course, we always intended to invite the owner along to drive their van in a couple fo scenes where the viewer didn't need to see the driver's face ! it's only polite. and knowing how much these vans mean to you all, it would have been strange to not have the owner around for some of the shooting. it's an emotional thing :)

tbh, i think we'll probably end up with a VW now. but maybe a T25, which haven't been used in films as much as the 50's, 60's & 70's ones. have found a decent one in london to hire at a really reasonable rate.

but i'm a bit of an optimist & am still living under the illusion that a Commer (which we prefer) suddenly appears before we start filming next Saturday.

One can but dream...

thanks again for your kind words, fondest regards, david.

yes, mike is driving 'rupert', but he is concerned that he won't be reliable enough for us in his current state. real shame, cos 'rupert' is stunning. but mike knows his stuff & at the end of the day, he doesn't want 'rupert' to let us down mechanically x

Bloody Commer`s!

The same applies to every Commer still on the road! The very nature of these vehicles means that mechanical reliability can never be guaranteed as is the same on any old vehicle that sees little use now, things can and do go wrong from a simple electrical fault to a major mechanical failure.quote:

just thought, if mike didnt want any money for it then couldnt you just put the 400 aside and say to mike that if it brakes down ect you will pay for the repair out of that? then after your finished just give him whatever is left. that way you get your commer. and he will get a few quid in his pocket and potentially some of ruperts problems ironed out as a bonus. could work out nice for you both :)

It's refreshing to hear you're fighting against using a VW. I'd offer you the use of my wee Lola, however it's yellow on top and what's much more of a hurdle is that we're in Northern Ireland - sorry! I wish you all the best of luck with the film . . .sounds like it's an exciting yet cathartic project.

Her name was Lola . . .
;)

Me thinks there is more to it than that;)quote:

David - If it were possible, I'd love to have Muttley used in a film, but (a) it's too late for you as it's a '79 Dodge, rather than a Commer, and more importantly (b) I'm about to drop the fuel tank off it to and try to sort out its running issue. Even after that, I couldn't guarantee it would be reliable, because, well, I've only driven it once and it broke down. It's be completely at your risk! lol

On an aside though, I may have a proposition for you to help, depending on location. I'll pm you a phone number if you want to ring tomorrow and I'll explain all.

Cheers
Graham

Hi there,

I would love for my van, 'Bumble' to appear in the film. I use her every week and actually live in her whilst on shift for a Television company in London!

Obviously I could not guarantee her reliabilty but she has'nt let me down so far this year (touch wood!!).

Two things, 1) she is a bit down at heal on the appearance front due to being hit by a tractor a couple of years ago and one complete side being white and grey whereas the driver's side is yellow and white (this actually adds to the character)!

AND b) When is the shoot exactly?

Jim.
