... So my boy's response to his big op next week was to throw his toys out of the metaphorical pram this evening.

An apparently dead starter motor and a pull start from the AA.

So that's my first call out and something to add to the shopping list tomorrow...
 
Stuck starter motor, if it happens again give it a thump with a blunt instrument- or put the van in gear (ignition and handbrake off) and push/pull the van. This should release the starter but It will probably need to come off for a clean.
 
While he's off having attention ask the surgeon nicely and he might do it as an extra, it's got to come off anyway.
