failed MOT and urgent parts required

Wilma failed her MOT! :( bugger! her brake lights decided to stop working on the way there, think it might be hydrolics?? any other suggestions welcome please before we start trying to trace the fault, also one of her shocks is leaking and needs replacing, not obvious unless you examine it closely, Speedys parts are shut until August and as we want to source and fit a replacement for the offending item in the 10 days allowed for a free retest ( to save another 53 quid) we are searching other internet sources and were wondering if anyone knows of any other suppliers, pleeeeease :D thanks Jayne xx
 
Can't help you with spares I'm afraid but the brake light switch is in the engine compartment and easy to change. Is it a front or rear shocker you are after?

thanks for that, we've got a manual that Les gave us somewhere, can we find it? NOT! Its the front offside shock we're after if thats any help ;) xx
 
Thanks Martin that would be really appreciated, Guy's gonna fiddle with the brake system during the next few days to try and find the fault, in the meantime how do you feel about posting the shock to us as we're in Bristol, and we know you're up north from us, financial renumeration would of couse take place as would pint buying should we ever meet :D
 
good luck with re-test - sounds like Wilma did pretty well for MOT if that all she failed on. Hope you manage to get bits on in time - if you get stuck looking for your manual would be able to copy relevant pages from mine if required:)

The brake switch is on the drivers side of the engine compartment, just behind the rad. Put a circuit tester across the terminals, then press the pedal. If you get a circuit, the switch is ok, then try the wiring.
 
will keep you posted if we don't find it :) the manual is in the house somewhere amongst the clutter of 2 adults 4 teenagers 1 four year old, 1 cat, numerous spiders and the odd silverfish :D:D
 
As I've said before, Martin is a prince amongst men!

If one shocker is all you need to pass the test then fair enough. But when you go to Speedys for the new one, I'd recommend buying two. IMO, you should always replace these things in pairs for safety reasons. Plus if one is worn then the other is likely close behind.

I once had a Subaru Impreza Turbo which used to try and swap ends under heavy braking. We later discovered it had odd rear brake pads fitted, each side was a different type with very different retardation properties! And to make matters worse, it had been owned by a mate from new and had only ever been serviced by the main dealers! Yeesh, some people huh!?
 
Guy spent a bit of time rummaging within the depths of Wilma, cleaned and checked brake switch, we now have brake lights! he couldn't wait to start fiddling this morning and mumbled alot when I dragged him away for a trip to the tip, yippee for Sunday mornings! cheers for the tip Andy, will keep it in mind. xx
