Exhaust System on Highwayman, tips...

I have been nursing the exhaust system on my Highwayman for the last 18 months, welding a bit here and a bit there...

The time has come to get a new one. I cannot buy an "off the shelf" Commer one as the engine in the van is from a Humber Sceptre and the manifold is different. I am going to take it to a local Stainless Steel manufacturer for a quote in the next few days. Has anyone got any suggestions which I should share with the guy before he makes it up for me? I have suggested that it may be beneficial to add some flexi-pipe into the system as the so that the manifold flange is relieved of some stress.

Any opinions, experiences etc. are very welcome.

Cheers

Hi Ruairidh, I made one up for the Rapier engine in Harvey - does the Sceptre engine have the twin down pipes as well - they make it a bit tricky but it is worth it. Have a look at this and the following pages - it does go on a bit but it might give you a few ideas.

You will just need a reducer from the downpipe then, Paul Goldsmith did a version for his standard engine that only needed the reducer welding (he keeps threatening to post some pics)- the rest was clamped together. I guess you will still need a bespoke down pipe though:I

For starters, here are 2 initial pics from my phone ;

a) Exhaust components as purchased (the custom bit is bottom left

b) Prototype after first cuts and assembly

This then required some fettling to fit, all clamped together - the pics in situ to follow once my camera battery is charged up ...

You made it look so simple:I I seemed to have made it far more difficult for myself but achieved the same result - good job[^]

My fettling just really involved shorting the connecting pipes between the 2 silencers to get it to fit lengthways. Also due to time constraints I used a offcut for the exit pipe, hence why it swings forward - I will replace a some point but all works really well.

Only regret was not using exhaust sealing paste on the joints too, had a few leaks which required some further tightening after use when hot. All seems great now, so cheers Panky - I hope you enjoyed that red it was most well deserved ;)

My camera battery is now charged up so here are my pics of in situ, fits nicely around the watertank (even though not in use, it maybe replaced by an LPG tank soon :p) BTW this installation uses the existing 2 exhaust hanging points, I just bought 2 new rubber hangers which have a 'hook' to clamp to the exhuast. I just added 1 more nearer the outlet as this exhaust design is somewhat heavier than the weedy Commer effort.

I can feel some inspiration coming on! That looks very neat, is it quieter than the stock set up? Mine sounds a bit flatulent which can get irritating on long journeys.

Mine sounds nice - but I've only heard it running in the Garage:I. I met Paul and Sally at Cambridge and had him blipping the throttle - a nice mellow sound but not over loud and being straight through it helps the engine breath much more easily - hence better power and economy, win/win [8D]
