Hi, I am making a stainless steel exhaust for my '83 dodge commer, the old exhaust was 1 1/2 inches dia but I am making the s/s one 2 inches dia. If I fit this and put a better filter onto the carb to help with breathing do you lot think this will aid the engine or just upset everything? I am also looking at fitting some minilite wheels and want to convert the brakes to discs, is this possible? And has anyone done this? Input would be gratefully recieved!!:D:DCheers
 
There are loads of posts about exhaust mods, do a search in the hints and tips part of the forum. 2" is definately better than 1 1/2", and the filter make a big difference to the performance. Can't help with the brakes, but woolfy is your man for minilites ;)
 
regarding the exhaust mods, the "bigger is better" does not exist. 2" is way too big for a commer, you are only pushing out 60 bhp of gases and a pipe that bore will cause the gas speed to drop and the gases to reverse flow and scavenging will suffer, it will fall flat on its face at lower rpm.
the biggest exhaust restriction is the silencers, ideally keep the pipe 1 1/2 and fit straight through type silencers like a RC40 system.
if you have to go bigger with the pipe keep it to 1 3/4" max :)

I have an RC40 and K&N filter on my van, coupled with electroic points which makes a pretty usefull and responsive van. The mods are pretty straight forward as far as I know.

As for the discs, I've never had any problems with my (servo assisted) drums up front. If you search the forum for Dozer's v6 ( a ford v6 fitted in a Commer) a nice conversion and still running the drums up front with out any problems aparently. Just need to make sure everything is in good nick.

Hi, where can I get an rc40 system from? Is it a straight bolt on or do you have to make mods to fit? I have made the exhaust at work today in my lunch break, I had a feeling that it might not work but it has not cost me anything.:( I was thinking of making a chassis from scratch and making a panelvan for racing so could probably use it then!:D:D
 
mini spares centre in london do the RC40 system, it needs a bit of modding to fit, but nothing too serious ;)

I am a fabricator/welder by trade and have wanted to build something different to race in and thought this would be pretty cool. I have built beetles before and modified them with larger engines etc, but want to build something from the ground up. When I bought my commer the chap gave me the workshop manual which has dimensional drawings in it for building a chassis.:D That way I could put whatever engine, suspension transmission, body That I wanted (hopefully!)
