ok :I a basic tool kit, gallon of water, tow rope, wire,bulbs,coil,points,plug,rotor arm, a selection of nuts/bolts, jubille clips,cable ties,some fuel pipe, spare rad hoses is a pretty good start

The list could be endless but I would rationalise it to rad hoses, fuel hose, fuel pump, coil and dizzy as these seem to be the most common problem areas (besides snakeskin[xx(]). Saying that the only break downs I ever had were a broken exhaust and a bad connection on the coil. Remember hose clips, cable ties, gaffer tape and Araldite - and a good tool kit:I

As Panky and Commeracer + a multimeter - always useful on cars with wiring that might be past its best. On my old VW, I now also carry reflective vests, reflective triangle, (it doesn't have hazards) axle stands, and wheel chocks. It's bad enough breaking down, but your car falling on you is no laughing matter either!
I'd say a spare fan belt is a definite - think someone mentioned water pipes... both of these seem to always go without any warning. I also carry a spare alternator, just in case.

An extra packet of fags is a good idea too. Unless you don't smoke;-)
