Even before we set off on this years trip my wife and I are planning a trip next summer from our base in London to the Highlands of Scotland. After some discussion, it would seem, that she is doubtful that our Commer would be up to the job...:(. My argument would be that so long as the van were serviced thoroughly before, RAC back-up in place and a bag of tools in the boot we should be fine.

The trip would add about 1200 miles on the clock but as we've already invested in the van, bodywork, servicing, carport etc it seems the cost of fuel would more than outweight this. I think she'd prefer to drive and tent.

My ultimate plan would be to take a leasurely and scenic route up north via York etc. Do the main Scottish sites we are keen to see then present her and the children with flights home whilst I bring the van and dog back as fast as we can.

I'd be curious to hear any views?:D

Try to attend the Imp Club's 50th anniversary celebrations based in Perth from 1st - 5th August 2013. The Sunday would be the best day as it's 'show and shine' day so you'll see loads of the little beggers - should be the odd Commer there too :D

You really should stay in the Red Squirel camp site in Glencoe. Tents and campervans only. No electric hookup but stunning setting and pub at the end of the road. Buttercup did well round the highlands and you've always got the RAC. Scottish roads perfect for Commers. No one is going anywhere fast and loads of passing places.

 
On their latest roadtrip Colin and Helen have just done around 1000 miles in their van - on a new engine. Didn't miss a beat[^]

Hopefully, by this time next month I will have successfully covered 2500 miles on a trip to the alps and back, fingers crossed

Thanks all, all really useful though a return trip on the back of the RAC loader wasnt too convincing, getting it sorted though!

Tim it's not a good idea to let the family go home by plane because who's going to push the van if she breaks down or who's going to change the wheel if you have a puncture?
 
Just finished our second thousand mile trip, it would have been more but we had a blown head gasket. Just prep the van well, sort out your recovery cover and take your time.

Didn't get to France,fixed head gasket in Yeovil and was wrong side of the country. Next year we are doing three weeks, so hopefully....
 
Go for it:p:p Take some spares and give the van lots of TLC before you go and just take it easy. We did a 600 mile trip to the Commerfest and just limited it to 1 1/2 to 2 hours of driving between stops and taking it easy. What about the belgian guys from commerfest (I know they did most of it on the ferry but did you see the van:D) The worst that can happen is you use the recovery you pay for to come home and then have to drive back with the tent while your better half lives it up in a hotel somewhere:) We get cover with the insurance (how do they make any money[?]) and have breakdown for personal use so in theroy I think we might be able to get towed wherever we are going and then recovered back on the other one;)) JUst means you don't do any touring in between[V]
