Engines??

Hello Everybody,
Just Thinking Outloud,Is There a possibility Of Modern Running Gear Being Put Into A Commer Camper,Mainly A Diesel Engine And Good Brakes As I Will Use My Van (When I Find The Right One)As My Daily Drive As Well As Travelling The Length and Breath Of The UK.
Please Don't Shout At Me If You Think Classic Campers Should Be Kept As God Intended, I'm Just Thinking about Practical Issues Like MPG And Reliabilty.
Thanks For Any Pointers.

Welcome to the forum. We are not a bunch of purists on here, our main aim is to keep as many vans on the road as possible, if it means modifying, then so be it. :)

As far as alternative engines, see postings by Will, he and his cousin have fitted vauxhall engines to theirs. Plus differant rear axles.

As far as I know, nobody has modified the fronts yet, but I say yet, as some guys are looking into it.

Keep us informed, if you have a van, post some pics.

hi there pete yes you can upgrade your camper with a better engine if you look back at some of the previous postings on here you will see that some of the other members have fitted vauxhall cavalier engines into their campers and are getting 80 mph+ they also get about 35mpg aswell. i hope this is of help to you and enjoy the forum as there are a great bunch of commer nutters on here who are always willing to lend a hand.:p

Hi peterjnr, there's been lots of discussions on engine transplants in here. Suggested mods have been Volvo, Rover V8 (my favourite) and various others. Woolfy is planning to shoehorn a Triumph straight six in his but the only successful ones so far have been a pair of very nicely done Vauxhall 2 Litre powered campers, not a task for the faint hearted. I guess anything is possible if you have the time skill and funds :) Check out the pictures from the last meeting for some pics of the Vauxhall installations.

hi there mart how are you mate i cant tempt you to come over to mine this weekend then, and have a go with the welder,it looks like i might be on my own at this rate as no ones actually said for deffinate if they are going to turn up.:([V]

hi petejnr just had a brain wave on the way home from woolfys welding day does anyone think a bedford midi deisel engine wood fit? its forward gear controls would match, its mid mount engine is isuzu so reliable, the gearbox is small, would give you not only five speeder but economy too, back axle could fit with work keeping gear ratios all in line

I've been thinking exactly the same thing I use to work on them and we never had to do anything on the motor apart from change the oil and filters, absolutly bullet proof. only problem is I haven't seen any for sale for ages. i know they fitted that motor in 94 & 95 but I don't know how long before and after. but don't what ever you do buy a vauxhall engined one it has to be the isuzu.

Thanks Charlie Sounds Like An Excellent Idea,
I'm On Very Good Terms With Our Local Vehicle Dismantler,So Will Give Him A Call Tomorrow, If I'm Successful I'll Let You Know
Thanks For The Tip
C U All Soon

ive been considering dropping a 2 litre porsche 924 engine in mine with an audi 5 speed box, 125bhp, nice torque curve, fuel injection, 40mpg

im pretty sure a disc brake conversion could get quite involved.. but a commer with brakes just somehow wouldnt be right.

oh no here we go again :D[}:)]:D isn't that what they put in them vw's? 40 mpg sounds good though [^] we know what you mean about a commer with brakes....lol

yeh, its essentially a 2 litre LT25 (or audi 100) engine with a different cylinder head and bosch fuel injection ..

wether i do it depends on wether i put a v8 in my 924, but we'll see.. the 1725 rootes engine is fit enough at the moment.

it returns 40mpg when its in the porsche, and that gets ragged, so i expect it'd be around the same in the commer.
