Engine swap

hi jules :) nothing wrong with fitting a holbay [^] at 100+ bhp its the engine they should have fitted in the first place [:0]
the twin 40,s probably would need some cutting out of the body to fit and even then they would end up "updraught" as the holbay sits at an angle originally.personally i dont like them as they cost a fortune to jet up and never stay in tune :(. the hif s.u is a great carb, easy to get, cheap, and jetting is done by changing the needle, they will give much more low end torque than webers for less fuel as well :p. obviously a one off manifold is needed (i can do this).
after a good study of the holbay head i have decided to do chris,s with Amal mk2 30mm bike carbs ,these are period as well(70,s). i have a bank of four ,so its carb per cylinder which gives the best throttle response and economy [^] as you can tune each pot individually. they are easy to tune and jet cheaply, can be modded to improve flow, will run 20 degrees of downdraught and because they are slide carbs have no butterfly/throttle shaft restricting the airflow,so they will flow more than webers.:p
my plan is to bore into the head at an angle and weld in tubes to give downdraught and a straighter port and get them up away from the exhaust and bodywork.
option 2 is a cut down single zenith manifold with the tubes welded to it so they are side draught, easier to do but not as efficient.
the biggest headache will be the throttle linkage, but where theres a will..........
minispares did a kit in the 60,s to mount the earlier mk1,s on a mini.
the drawback is the cost, about £140 each new, but i got these of ebay for £60 2nd hand [^].if you sold the webers you should get a good price for them.
hope this is of help to you,if you need a manifold adapting/making i can help with that.:D

Hi Tim
Next weekend the motor goes in hopefully. So I will see what manifold options are open. I'm thinking a little that maybe the 40s are not sensible in such a restricted bay as they are prone to blow-back (or maybe I never tune them right:(

probably a wise move [^] may i suggest a eaton m45 supercharger and a big s.u :D

I've fitted quad bike carbs from a yamaha R1 to the 1725 in my sunbeam alpine. Bought the set up from Bogg Bros (do a google) cost around £490 all in. Rolling roaded at 115bhp with a few other mods.

If / when i find a suitable commer (...) I'm thinking of doing something similiar - has a nice smooth idle (forget Strombergs they are a nightmare)and fuel economy is up to (50s brit technology vs 90s jap).

Bogg Bros. :p I keep meaning to pay them a visit to use the rolling road, not far from me :)

Alternativly you could try fitting this [:0]

I dont like Stombergs either, especially the near impossibe to use CD variants on the Alpines which need the special tool just to adjust the mixture - which breaks often into the bargain. They're always going out of tune, the diaphrams keep splitting (probably because repro ones are thin & useless and any originals still about have perished) and parts are rare/expensive. I'd like to stay period (as I'm a real anorak on the sly :I) so dont really want to go the Nikki or Jap route. Would like SU 1 3/4 or poss 2" but would require a custom inlet (i'm tight too):I

is that twin or a single s.u jules [?]
either way i can sort you a manifold no problem :)
if you look at chris,s riley pics you can see the one i modified to take twin hif s.u,s off mg metros.

How about a transit 2.5 di lump? common enough to be cheap, they run forever and the 70ps version, whilst not overendowed with power, is capable of around 40-45 mpg and 85mph in a transit swb, if you rob the leaf sprung rear axle as well you will also have higher gearing for easier cruising in your commer. I must admit, I would love a commer but its only the performance and poor economy that put me off.

Sounds like a good option, might need a bit more sound proofing [:0]

Got the motor installed. managed to get the Holbay extractor fitted, with a bit of bending & swearing.
But as predicted, the webbers are practically in my lap. So am going the easy but boring route of twin Stom 150s. Hope I can flow them a little for a bit more delivery

If its of interest to anyone, I'll be doing 2.0l swap on my Highwayman in the next few month hopefully. Its a 2.0 Bedford Midi, which has a notched pan to clear steering and a nice slim exhaust manifold :D
The fueling is going to an issue as its currently got a Nikki carb on it which is big and very rubbish! (ive been quoted £250 for the conversion kit, but I might take one from a 2.5 L/rover and have the flange welded to my manifold)

The gear linkage is another concern as its rod change, Im thinking of using an Mr2 or MGF gear lever unit and cables, welding threaded rod the selector arms on the box and adjusting with double lock nuts until it changes nice (could take a while to fiddle that :( )

any1 else got ideas I could chuck in?

When I start doing it, I'll be more that happy for ppl to come and have a look and maybe get some ideas?

Dan

sounds good guys! lets hope conversions are all done in time for summer meets... it will certainly give us all something to talk about :D:D:D:D
