Engine Swap help

Dont forget to keep us posted, i to planing van number two, i have a perkins 4108 auto van, it gives 45 mpg 65 mph top speed with overdrive , yes over drive, just bolted on the back of the auto box ,but still restricted by the back axle ratio , as mentioned by Tim look at axle change is a must ,

I am also looking at this conversion for my van - which might be happening this year. Having been discussing this with a few people I know, a good candidate donor appears to be a volvo diesel. Personally, I will be going for one with an auto box, so that it simplifies the gear change.

The reason for the swap would be reliability, fuel economy and the ability to pull a trailer with a car on it. I am not interested in top speed or eye-watering acceleration. I think whatever the conversion - the PB isn't really suited to anything more than 70 - so an oil burner is the route.

Be carefull on your weight limit if your van is a 1500 weight one,you dont want to be getting pulled up by vosa. Check on your chassie plate you could do with a 2500 van if your goin to put a trailer and car on it.Thats only just about on the limit as a camper converted commer must weigh about 1.5ton leaving you a ton to put on the back so only small car with a very light weight trailer, brian james ones and the like.

Just checked an the 2500 van is acctually rated at 2.43tons gross vehicle weight. So less than i first thought. The rear axle weight is 1.3ton.

My Ifor Williams light weight trailer weighs 500KG, so that leaves you less than 1/2ton:I

Thanks for that - but the car(s) in questions are imps, which weigh in about 680kg, and it'll either be on an a-frame, towing dolly or small trailer. I'll have a look to see what the van is when I am back home next week.

You need to use the omega auto box (fairly small) and then the worlds your oyster with the engines as most of the vauxhall engines mate to this ie the 1.7 diesels, the 1.8 petrols, 2.0 petrols and i think the frontera used a 2.4 isuzu diesel so torque, reliability and economy.

The early bird catches the worm... but the early worm gets eaten first!

Ive had a 2.0l vauxhall engine and box in my commer for nearly 7 years. 130 bhp, sit at 80 mph all day and will easly pull 100mph very good on fuel too. The vauxhall engine and box is lighter than the commers too. the engine loom is very simple and has 7 wires you,l need to connect to the commers loom you,l need to have the prop, engine mounts and gear linkage altered. ive been everywhere in mine thousands of miles just put fuel in and changed the oil every year. also alot quieter than the original engine best mod i ever did. just to add though, the commers original engine is a very good engine, set up right with over drive will sit at 70mph all day.(100 times better that our air cool friends)[}:)]. i only changed my engine due to 400mile round trips to cornwall every other weekend and fuel costs.:)

Why on earth would you change the 1725 lump for a 2ltr redtop if not for economy?:)
