engine running rough

i wonder if anyone can help me. last year i had a few problems with my engine running extremely roughly. not ticking over spluttering when driving at a steady speed or slowing down (funny it was better when accelerating) and if i advanced the tick-over speed so it would keep ticking over it would be very uneven. it did this when the exhaust was blowing and then it got really bad and it was a dodgy ht lead. i got it working OK then this year got new plugs and points etc. and it was best it had ever been. then last week it suddenly it went back to its old ways and probably the worst its ever been. I've tried playing about with the ht leads. i noticed one of the connectors inside the distributer cap was at a strange angle so got a new cap and rotor arm all to no avail. it runs better with the choke out a wee bit. would anyone have any clues what to do next.
hope all well
cheers
dan

First thing to check is the air filter as it may be choked up, try running the engine without it on and see what happens. If that's OK it could be a blocked idle jet, with the filter bend off the top of the carb rev the engine and put the palm of your hand over the intake to the carb a few times - it will suck very hard and hopefully pull any crap through - this is assuming you still have a Zenith or Webber fitted.

Run it up in the dark and you will see any electrical leakage ;)

cheers for advice unfortunately nothing worked and cant see any electric leakage. i was wondering the fact that it runs so much better when the choke is out a little bit that the fuel air mix might be wrong and too much air getting in or not enough fuel. i ran the tank quite low recently and maybe the in-line fuel filters i put in might have a load of crap in them restricting the fuel and if that could possibly make it run bad or am i kidding myself and should i take the carburettor to bits and check that.

I had exactly the same issue 3 weeks ago and was purely down to tuning. Great at accelerating but a constant speed would stutter. Tweaked mixture and fine since

Hasta la supervista baby

I changed the filter next to the petrol tank and cleaned the gauze that is in the fuel pump and tried it and it was just the same. I then changed the little filter I put near the carburettor and while I was waiting for the petrol to evaporate that had come out I noticed that the pipe that connects to the vacuum advance was a bit dodgy looking. I taped it up well then started him up and he's running like a dream [8D]. so its either one of them. thanks for all advice and will hopefully meet some of you at martins in sept :D

Hi Danny, it was probably the vacuum hose, if it's long enough, shorten it a little so you get a decent fit...you should be able to replace it very easily and cheaply ;)
