you might get lucky - I found my van for £100
hadn't seen the roof chop spacevan before - messes with yer sense of scale that one, roof looks right until you look at the grille

Sadly, 200 squid only gets you a basket case nowadays [xx(]
appreciate this is a longer shot but if you happen to know anyone likely to be coming back from Northern Ireland with an empty trailer there is this one that needs saving desperately within current budget....

Well, it's 4 years later, and depending on how a job application I've got in goes, I might be ready to do this soon. Engine swap is still a goer, probably not the hydraulics unless I found a really good engineer who didn't want a fortune for the work. I'm now thinking along the lines of a something between my two previous ideas. A pop-top camper, where I'd do the front in Jag leather seats, and in the back, well......
I've been at a VW Camper event, and loved some of the custom interiors. On the other hand, I do like the way many Commers are done out. However, I'm 6'3, and I suspect that the standard crosswise bed, as well as not providing safe seating for travel, will not be long enough for me. I guess I'm thinking of replacing at least that with a rock and roll bed backing onto the front seats. It would be fun to do the interior in a sort of art deco style, perhaps. As far as the poptop goes, I would need the finished vehicle to be a 4 berth, has anyone tried fitting something like a Westfalia top, where you can get a full double up there?

I guess the roof only needs to be big enough and long enough to accomodate a bed; modifying things to that there was one would be doable. And yes, it's been ages. I got sidetracked; bought a big old 22 foot Merc and converted that, but last year I got sick of it; too big, got turned away from campsites some places for "not being a proper camper", a bit unwieldy, and I couldn't justify keeping it on the road because I only drove it 3-4 times each summer. Now got a Daihatsu Hijet which is fecking brilliant - comfortably sleeps two in the back (no space for anything else though, all the camping gear lives under the bed, I put up a Coleman classic awning, and everything but sleeping happens outside!), and can carry six people, or, I've discovered, a piano.
Anyway, I could now afford a £1000 Commer, but I don't have time or money to spend on it, but a career change has been forced upon me by way of redundancy, and one of the irons that I've got in the fire would get me enough income to comfortably buy a decent one, get it the way I want it, and keep it in good nick. We'll see!
