I'm using twin strombergs as sidedrafts wouldnt fit anyway.

Panky, your s.u is a hif6 which is a very good carb, flows 240 cfm and can be modded to flow over 300 (2.2 per bhp needed) as you know its just a matter of fitting the right needle. its my first choice of carb [^] never liked strombergs as they have the diaphram which perishes and plays up [xx(](good luck jules)
Rupert, it all depends on exactly what you want.
i did it the old school way by milling/turning all the bits so its fairly time consuming,took a couple of days. its far easier to modify an existing manifold especially if its ali. and yes the exhaust manifold needs changing at the same time.
my j4 is a good example, it had a 26mm solex and just wheezed its way to 65mph, now with a 40mm amal, decent head and extractor manifold/exhaust it flys up to 85-90 mph
