Went to get some oil but nothing suitable, except halfords 20w50. would this be o.k.[?]

it will do I have used it tesco do one cheap & cheerfull also morrisons sometimes you can get job lots on ebay better quality any oil better than no oil

The way to identify a good oil is by looking at the api rating, they have on the can API/SG the last letter can be A-L, G onwards is good
