Engine fire - gutted in every sense

Just taken it out of the shed and washed down ready for MOT.

Looking on the positive side no-one was hurt and it wasn't inside the shed, which is attached to the house!

It's now been taken away by the insurance company, I'm sure they will write it off but just wondered what my options are. Hate to think of it going into the crusher. Surely as a worst case someone may be able to salvage something from it. Can anyone advise?

If you insurance has you down for salvage rights then you should be able to claim you van back, but if not then you will have trouble I'm afraid. Telfordbob's van was torched by some low lifes and I'm afraid he couldn't get it back unless he didn't put in a claim.
Oh god I feel sick just looking at the picture - I can't imagine how you must be feeling.

Noooo. Absolutely gutted for you. So glad nobody was hurt.

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.
 
It's a terrible shame about the van but the main thing is that nobody was hurt. Vehicles are replaceable, people are not.

Chills the blood! We got off lightly with Yori, but I had an extinguisher and it worked

Gutted for you ,everyones worst nightmare . hopefully you had an agreed value and they will fix you up quickly.Salvage needs to be asked for quickly as they pay out huge ammounts for storage and will be happy to get money back for the shell, usually a percentage of what they pay out.
 
Thanks everyone. It's not good to dwell on the "what ifs" but suffices to say that it could have been much worse.
Will speak to insurance company re salvage but is it really worth considering. It's way beyond my capability but could it done or should I just accept that it's the end for this van.

Such a shame[V] it was a lovely solid van by the look of it. It's so sad to see and yes anything can be saved - but at a cost. It would need everything replacing, every rubber, every seal, glass, engine ancillaries, interior, wiring............ to do a full restoration would cost way more than the insurance will pay out so realistically it will only be useful for any spares that are left - or someone looking to re-shell their van. Unless you've got somewhere to store it or there is someone willing to take it off you hands I'm afraid it's the worst news[V]

Lost power then smelt fuel before a woosh and flames started coming from the engine lid. Afterwards when I looked had been leaking fuel down the road for about 20 yards. Been sat for a long time so assume that the fuel line had perished.
 
My god that was almost me too. On my way back from getting some paint the same thing happened (except for the flames:I)Engine died and strong smell of petrol, turned out to be the fuel line had popped off the pump. I guess because it came right off the engine died quickly and not too much fuel sprayed around. There but by the grace of God.
Everyone check your fuel lines, let this be a terrible lesson.

I know that it's a terrible thing to happen and it's no consolation but the photo of her in flames is absolutely fantastic and should be worth a bob or two if you can just find the right person.

So sad but no one was hurt or worse.
You wont get a burnt vehicle back from the insurance as it will be classified as cat a or b which is destroy or parts only.
Les that was a really crass comment you made :(
