Engine Cutting Out?!

Hi Guys,

Well we ventured out for a trip to see my Dad and nephew today and half way there we developed a problem - when we slowed down the engine kept cutting out - making it very difficult at roundabouts etc!

We noticed also then that when starting up we needed to apply the accelerator as it wouldn't keep running without any revs - what do you think this could be?

New spark plugs needed? Oil? Sensors? Flooded fuel? I'm wondering if it's misfiring also?

We are still learning about this old school lark and it's not like we can get Gordon plugged into the computer diagnostics at a garage!

Any advice for us 'blondes' would be greatly appreciated!:D

I am no mechanical mastermind bout you could look at the following....

Check where the the fuel line from the pump to the carb goes...it gets very hot in the engine compartment and this can cause the fuel to vaporize before it reaches the carb, make sure it is not resting on the engine and getting too hot

also have you got inline fuel filters? well worth putting one just before the carb and iff poss one before the fuel pump too. Commers have a problem with 'snakeskin' When the van was new the fuel tank was coated or painted inside. Over time this 'paint' breaks down into a glue like substance and works its way through to the pump and carb causing a blockage....worst scenario is a new tank. Commeracer can make you a brand new ally one:D

The mis firing is quite common or popping sound....could be a small leak in the exhaust?


 
Try something simple first like the air filter - or simple adjust the tick-over screw. If that doesn't work it maybe a fuel pump problem - or a blockage in the fuel line.

Thanks for your replies, I shall have a look at what you suggested when I get a spare minute.

I'm not sure if there are any commer fans near us really?! Don't know if Martin is nearest to us - but that would mean an hour and a bit trip and I'm not sure if we'd make it!:p

I'll let you know how we get on...:D

Its most likely a carb/fuel related problem, either the idle mixture is a bit out or the tickover is a bit slow or a bit of snakeskin in the fuel lines/carb :)
