Engine Cover Insulation

My Commer Wanderer has the original Engine Cover Inner Insulation still in place.
It is starting to fray a bit with age. It has been suggested that this sheet material probably contains Asbestos.
Does anyone know for certain what material was used and if Asbestos would a simple clear coat of urethane seal it effectively ? I am one for originality but not if it is trying to kill me .

I don't think it contains asbestos but you cant be sure, pretty sure it's just fibre board. You can replace it with a hot water cylinder jacket which also has the benefit of adding a bit of sound insulation:)

I used the standard fibre insulation you can get on ebay that's black on one side. Stuck black side to engine cover using high temp contact adhesive. Been stuck 3 years without issue and much much quieter
